A Thread for the Migraineurs
    #11768106 -

I suffer from chronic migraine headaches. I have for the past 15 years of my life, and it's miserable at times. If you don't get migraines, it's pretty hard to imagine how a "headache" could be so debilitating, or even that migraineurs are being truthful about their pain.

Personally, I have tried a laundry list of preventative, abortive, and natural medicines and therapies... currently I'm taking Lyrica to prevent migraines and Relpax, Maxalt, and Imitrex, triptans, to abort them.

I also wanted to use this board to start an open forum for migraineurs who may have tried combining medications with psychoactive substances like LSD, psilocybin, MDMA, etc. I know that it is very difficult to find user experiences like this around the internet... and often times the resources and experiences are very old or outdated. For instance, through personal experience, I determined that if I want to trip on mushrooms, I MUST wait 7 days after taking any triptan medication. If you're interested in the mechanism, let me know. But I can take MDMA with little to no effect with a triptan or lyrica, and same goes for 2c-e.

Also about the wellness aspect... I find that when I feel a migraine coming or am in the throes of one, I get very depressed about life because of how helpless I feel to my migraines sometimes. I look at my friends, who can go out and do whatever they want without worrying if they forgot to bring their headache medicine with them, or knowing that they have an "escape/abort" plan in case they get an attack. It's pretty shitty. That being said, they are definitely moving me towards a more Buddhist lifestyle. I'm ttrying to shed all my cynicism, and since most of the people I met here on the Shroomery are so nice anyways, I feel like if some of the migraineurs can connect here that would be fantastic.

I've gotten them all my life. I hate how people shrug it off and say that you probably just haven't had enough sleep or ate something that upset the balance. OMG!!! I want to tear their heads off!!!

I've tried a plethora of drugs as well. Triptans worked great at first but if I don't abort immediately I'm doomed. I like taking a huge toke of heavy indica with a roach and it really helps. Also, the aroma from dank roaches lingers longer and helps immensely. Aromatherapy works. If I don't have that dank smell lingering when I take a deep breath, it feels a lot less effective,

I don't know what else to do either. I can take a ton of morphine but if my migraine is going, it's going. Gotta abort mine immediately. Sucks to be at work and get them. People see me with an aura, photo and stereosensitivity getting worse and they think I'm either hung over or sleep deprived. I'm a bigger guy now so people think it's just steroids or that I'm working out too hard. What about when I was a 100lb pussy? I avoid my triggers and do everything in my power but sometimes they still occur.

I get more than 15 a month so technically that's a chronic illness, right? Have you talked to the doc about medical marijuana? I want to ask mine but he knows I use steroids. And my father was a drug addict (opiates and cocaine after breaking his femur twice in a motorcycle accident). Dad asked for a referral but he was told "no", even though my dad uses weed to help abstain from opiates which he fiends for, but never touches!!

I share your pain, bro. Sorry I don't have much else to contribute. Not enough time to put it as eloquently as you have. I'm so sick of migraines I just lack the patience to even sit here and talk about them, just the thought makes me miserable as hell. I'm otherwise extremely healthy but these damn, fricken migraines! And no one empathizes for migraineurs, they just try to diagnose it with some insulting assumption that you've fucked up and can't take care of yourself.

What kind of aromatherapy do you use? My roommate used to burn sage every now and then, but I found that it usually helped trigger a migraine... at least i thought so, can't ever be certain though.

And unfortunately the state I must live in for now is not 420 friendly :frown:.

I know you most likely already know this but the steroids probably aren't helping your migraines... Not being super muscular doesn't make any less of a person.

I got my first migraine when I was 8, I remember it vividly

It was the first time I ever experienced anything like an "Aura"
I was in the Shop & Save parking lot and the wind crept up in just such a way; everything went black (not really, but you know...) and I felt a crushing, burning, throbbing, electric energy phase into part of my head.

When it set in fully I felt like the part that it took over was now bruised, I pictured it as a dark blackish purple chunk of brain matter

it was the most intense experience of my life up to then...

I haven't gotten one in an incredibly long time. I don't know why, maybe I just learned how to avoid it, because it honestly feels like every time it happens I do it to myself.

I've had the Aura experience before every one but it wasn't like it's normally described; I was actively taking part in it and it wasn't until the pain started to come in and I realized "Oh man I think I'm getting a headache" that I knew what was going on.

It's like I think myself into it.
A lot of times I'd just think of a headache for one reason or another; some one would have one or be talking about it and I'd start thinking about it and all the emotions I had about it would well up and I'd remember what it was like, and just like when you're really high and you think about an intense acid experience you had you can almost feel it coming on (or sometimes even really re-do it), I'd experience the full onset of my migraine. And unlike sweet acidy visuals from really strong weed, it would never go away until it'd fully debilitated me for a day or so.

Then I sleep, and sleep and sleep, and wake up hung-over but some how better than I ever was before.

The aura itself has taken a significant role in my life over the years.
It started with the migraines, everything would take on a really ominous tone and I'd become really cynical and angry and reclusive.
After years, I started having the same experience before the onset of severe anxiety-attacks (never had a real panic attack luckily), depressive down-swings, and all psychedelic come-ups (often, but not always, including weed. Surprisingly, also including Ecstasy. I'm one of the only people I know who's nervous and scared to take E the same way I get a lump in my throat when faced with a heroic dose of acid)

Moving on, though...
my best defenses have always been loads of Excedrin Migraine (caffeine, analgesics, and nsaids in one pill. Who could ask for more?), silent darkness (or very very low tv with the contrast and brightness near black), caffeinated beverages and heat (space heaters, baths)
jerking off works for a quick relief but usually follows with a HEAVY return

Usually I just get so incredibly overwhelmed with misery that I just give in, lay down in black silence and consider myself dead until it's over.

I'm totally starting to give think myself into a migraine :hissyfit:

No offense, but these are the types of responses that make migraneurs want to fly into a fit of rage and start mercilessly killing people.

I've lived with migraines my entire life so I've taken tiny steps like abstaining from too much visual aggravation and minded my sleeping patterns.

I'll try to be nice though... yes, I've done those things. Trust me. If it were that simple, I'd perfect those things and avoid any other easy migraine triggers.

REAL migraines are far more than just bad headaches with a little nausea, I've seriously contemplated suicide at times. I've sat there with a vial of humalog (fast acting insulin, 10mls which is more than enough to send me into a diabetic coma and eventual death), tons of benzos and zopiclone. I've thought about just injecting the whole vial of insulin and popping just enough pins to fall asleep without my body trying to vomit and purge the poisons. Yes, they are that bad at times! :frown:

smmu, it's Eagle Brand medicated oil that I like. My grandma is Filipino and her house totally smelled like this. My in-laws also use this as well. Cambodian people adopted a technique from the Chinese (Gao Yaw - just spelled it phonetically... Viet translation means to scratch wind) where they'll rub an old soup spoon against your skin to damage the capillaries and bring blood to the surface of the skin. They'll lubricate it with the medicated oil. I think it's mostly just the aromatherapy and "faith" that do most of the healing. I like dosing a small napkin with it, rolling it up and just breathing it in from time to time when I'm at work. I smell like an old Chinese lady but it works well for me. I think the hugest part of it is the nostalgia though. Reminds me of my grandma and helps to ease my migraines.

I've also been careful with the steroids too. My blood pressure is very good, lipid profile is good, liver and kidney values are in check, but I am aware that inflammation brought on from both steroids and bodybuilding can have a part to play. Muscular hypertrophy is largely cause by the inflammation of muscles. I've read about prostaglandins, cyclo-oxygenase, cytokines, interleukin, etc. Lots of people in the health care industry in my family so I've had lots of books to read. Those books were a precursor for my interest in pharmacology. Not understanding much biology, I went online and read more books. That piqued my interest for psychedelics and drugs and eventually led me to this site! lol

I don't really use many recreational drugs anymore aside from anabolic steroids and marijuana though. I've met a lot of people who specialize in inflammation and I've been able to pick at their brain thankfully enough. It seems that inflammation hasn't actually aggravated my migraines too much, ever since I started lifting and eating better they've subsided. Even when inflammation was on the rise. Certain food allergies and muscle stiffness from sleeping wrong (fiance rolling on top of me in my sleep or getting tangled in a mess of blankets) seems to be the worst.

I've had tons of blood work to no avail, inflammation can aggravate migraines when they're there, but doesn't seem to be the cause - thank goodness! Thank you for your concern and your experiences though. I'm running low on Almotriptan and thinking of trying other triptans. Wish I could just get a damn medical marijuana referral though!!

I was stricken with 3-4 migraines a week from age 6 till about 14.  It absolutely ruined my life, but I think something happened during puberty where I only get about 3 a month now.  Work bitches whenever I call out with a migraine, and it's clear they've never had one.  Oddly enough Excedrine migraine actually works a lot better/faster than any prescription I've used.  I don't usually take medicine though for migraines... I just try to sleep it off and if I have pot available I'll load a fat bowl up and go to town on it until I get a buzz strong enough to put me to sleep.

God I can't even begin to list the amount of activities, field trips, and parties I've missed because of the excruciating migraine pain.  The only real cure seemed to be a quiet, dark, room, and finding that sweet spot to lay in and not moving until I fell asleep.  As a kid my parents used to sit in bed with me and hold my head until I was almost asleep.

I totally feel you guys, I'm 100% empathetic.   :sun:

Do you work in an environment with bright fluorescent lights?  I firmly believe that was my trigger, being stuck at school all day in an insanely bright room.  Work is even worse (Best Buy) but they're still not as frequent as when I was younger.

I have been cursed by headaches since I was 8 years old,  it started with migraines and developed into several types of HA's.  In 1993 I was hit with Cluster headaches,  I  have had chronic migraines and clusters since 2002(that is where my screen name comes from CH Cluster Headache Hell.
I have tons of knowledge on both migraines and clusters,  if you have questions and don't want to talk about it on the board you can PM me.

How much experience do you have with triptans? Any bad side affects other than the ones listed in the drug description? And aside from RCs, are there any other drugs that have lost recreational value?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I've felt no negative sides but I wonder what else it could affect. I really like to research substances before I put them in my body but I can't find jack shit about triptans.

Triptans are an evil drug made by the devil himself.  If you take triptans for any chronic headache the HA will become worse and you will need more and more triptans.  I was taking Imitrex injections every two hours because once it wore off the HA was back only worse.  I wasn't intentionally suicidal but when I think back I didn't care if I lived or died and I am surprised that I am still alive. Imitrex is supposed o be limited to two a day I was taking 12.
Side effects I get from Imitrex are lock jaw,  painful joints, loss of appetite, pain and swell of my eyes, high blood pressure that is all I can think of off the top of my head but there are plenty more.
As for Triptans and rec. drugs everyone is different but they will block any hallucinogenic drug there is from RC seeds to MDMA for a minimum of five days,  if there is a specific drug you are thinking of I a sure I can tell you how it reacts with triptans just ask.
RC seeds and other hallucinogenic drugs are great for migraines,  there have been many studies on this check the info in my sig(it's Clusterbusters but they have good info for meegrainers.LOL) or M.A.P.S. is designed for migrainers and I think there is a link at the top of the page.

Thanks for the feedback, CH HELL. You've just scared the shit out of me lol.. I just paid more attention to your screen name as well. Damn!

In any event, that's what I was looking for. I'm able to use them sparingly so as long as my BP/heart, liver, GI and kidneys are okay then I'm pretty content. Only rec drug I do is marijuana and some occasional benzos or opiates when I need to relax, so my tolerance is always zilch. Just wondering about that though.

Really appreciate the good discussions, everyone. Very interesting. After my workout tonight I'm going to try scouting out some good migraine/headache forums! Anyone know of any?

WHOA. Hold on there CH.
I don't get clusters... for me, it's a migraine 3 times per week on average. Triptans literally are a lifesaver. There are 8 or so different triptan meds. I have tried Zomig, Imitrex, Relpax, Maxalt, and Frova. EVERY TRIPTAN IS DIFFERENT in its mode of action as well as an individual's side effects.
Zomig didn't work for me. Frova takes over 2 hours to kick in, but won't ever leave me with a rebound. Maxalt works 50% of the time for my migraines that are all over my head. But Relpax works 90% of the time and is best when I can feel a migraine or am already in one. Imitrex injections work to let me pass out, as they make me very tired.

All triptans block the receptor that Psilocybin uses. If you take a triptan med, you must wait between 5 and 7 days before you can even think about tripping mushrooms unless you want to waste the mushies. I mean completely wasted, you don't feel shit.
I haven't tried acid on it.
MDMA is NOT blocked in the slightest by triptans or zofran (an anti-nausea med I use). I only roll 3-4 times per year on special occasions. So when I do, I load up with a Relpax and 8mg Zofran about an hour before dropping the MDMA. No nausea, no migraines, and I see the love pouring out of everything I see. I most certainly feel its glorious effects.
Salvia also is not affected by triptans. Neither is marijuana. I do notice that weed + triptans = drowsy. Weed alone does this to me sometimes. Triptans also can make me drowsy, so this makes sense.

Be careful: Before you know how drugs will affect you in combination, start slowly with a small dose of whatever it is you want to take.

Triptans can be a lifesaver if used sparingly,  but once you start getting the rebounds you need to back off.  Frova is probably the best choice for migraines they are supposed to last 24 hours(I get 12hours relief from it).  You are right though I am little different having both clusters and migraines,  so maybe my scenarios are not  proper here I will stop after this.
There are some decent preventive meds like proprananol, topamax and others if you are interested.
Also smmu MDMA is totally blocked for me even doubling or tripling the dose I don't feel a thing.
