Those don't look like albinos, in all honesty.  Those have the same pigment and shade that most that I found last season had.

those are typical weilii colors, caramel. brownish. the ones in the OP have wayyy less pigment. the mushroom on the right in the third (final) photograph of the OP was placed there for contrast.

even those cream colored weilii have two tones in the cap vs the 1 tone of the true albino's in the OP. they just arent very fresh in the photograph. to obtain a pearly white albino i'm sure you have to find something like that first and go through a few generations of tissue cultutres, picking the shroom with the least pigment each time.

Possibly, it's just that albinos are generally regarded as rare, but the majority of my weilii finds from last year are that same color.  Furthermore, those samples don't really show a lack of pigment, they are just that smoky grey color, like most weilii I found.

Who knows.

well i don't remember you posting any pics of light colored weilii. i remember you found that cluster halfway through the season and then maybe a few more rearby probably with similar genetics. if you have any pics you would like to share though the matter is certainly up for debate.

but from what i see in your gallery and from being a part of the weilii thread last season, i think your memorys off.

i thought so myself thanks

next season im gonna be jabbing needles in all sorts of mushrooms, then depending on what kind it is ill send it to whyblameus or noobie to grow. and if i can find some more of those galindoi or anything else cool, maybe workman will want it

i wonder if you should dip the stipe in h202 before you suck a tissue sample into the syringe.

i wonder if i had taken a tissue culture from one of the weilii in the op and cultivated the next generation, would it be brown, grey, or white.

most weilii are brown. i personally have seen many tan ones but never anything colored like those, i was still puzzled when i found them, only positive when they began to blue.

so i'm pretty sure those were whiter when they were smaller. they are fully mature and not able to produce spores. maybe this resembles a gene trait that can be carried on to the next generation.`

does anybody have photos of off colored mushrooms or albino mushrooms for us to look at?

Are you sure it wasn't just the hygrophanous reaction as the pileus dries in the sun or dry weather?
Here are some examples, if I had left these specimens to mature more without watering or misting them the hygrophanous reaction would have spread to the very margin of the pileus giving the impression of a very light pigmented cap!
Not producing spores does not always mean it's an albino, the specimens below are almost sporeless, I have also seen many P. weilii images that show very pale fruit bodies and think it's a common trait in that species!
You should try to find more specimens from the same area and take more pictures, maybe there is an albino strain out there.

weilii do the same thing when they are exposed to sun, sure. these are some very sunbleached caps

i need to find a better example of there the cap will have clearly two tones in it alot of the time like the photographs you posted. that could also be due to the sun. these were not exposed to the sun at all. alot of the time they arent, you have to uncover them

here are sunbleached weilii, and sporeless, but nothing still like the others

but they were all relatively brow the first time i saw them.
that was a cluster that had little white pins. they were never brown

even the typical sporeless variety is brown

i went fishing after i picked those and they turned a bit yellow as they began to dry out.

haha i need a better camera. and a better season

Ps. galindii (galindoi) are easy to find, they grow in the same habitat that weilii do, I think many people pass them up because of how they look, with their long skinny stipe they look like many of the mushrooms that grow in these habitats, when checking a grass habitat for weilii check along the treeline for Ps. galindii, often early and then later in the season they fruit.

Also those weilii in the first set of pics are not albinos, they have not dropped spores yet that is all.

Ive seen weilii that had white gills for 3 days and had plane caps, then the gills started to turn light purple/lavender then deep purple.  I have noticed this many times with weilii, it seems like they take a while to drop their spores compared to other actives I have encountered in the field (Ps. cubensis) but maybe thats just my experience.

lol forget the gills i nevver should have mentioned them. the stipe and cap are both lacking in pigment. forget the word albino too, whatever they were some c ool not sunbleached weilii

and i love the rest of your post. sam e habitat, usually nearby, look a bit different, smell/taste alot different
they look like hershey's kiss alot

All Psilocybe species are typically hygrophanous regardless of exposure to the sun, it usually occurs due to lack of water, good luck on your albino hunt, hopefully you can find it again next season and get some nice photos:cool:

It could have been a leucistic variation rather than a true albino!

"The adjective hygrophanous refers to the color change of mushroom tissue (especially the pileus surface) as it loses or absorbs water, which causes the pileipellis to become more transparent when wet and opaque when dry.

When identifying hygrophanous species, one needs to be careful when matching colors to photographs or descriptions, as color can change dramatically soon after picking."

thanks hopefully ill have a good hunt next year. and i promise a 10+ megapixel camera way before then!

are albino's hygrophanous?
it seems that they would be since the water content has nothing to do with the actual genes of the mushroom. so this would explain why you see the grey tones in the cap.

one coolm thing is my friend's patch always seemed to match the different qualities, because weilii vary alot, but whatever was at my spot, would be at my other spot and the same at his, and you can even see on the shroomery weilii will look alike when posted the same day. it has something to do with weather i guess

but this one spot has always put out something different than the others

it has mutant mycelium lol
