I was watching CNN last night and there was this dude from NY either a senator or a member of the house who wants to write legislation that would make it mandatory for every US citizen to serve in the armed forces. I have 3 questions about this; does this asshole have any sort of support aside form the obvious hard-core war hawks in congress, meaning does this have any chance of actually becoming law? Is it constitutional, I know a draft is considered constitutional but is forced mandatory service? And finally if this actually becomes law will I be able to get out of it by making a pass at my drill sergeant or by failing a drug test? Oh and any other information on this subject would be appreciated; all I got was the 30 second rundown by the anchor on CNN.

I heard a little bit of that. He wants that to pass because if we all serve in the military we'll all think twice about sending our soldiers to war for no reason, right?

Amendment XIII
Section 1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Section 2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
However, the government chooses to ignore the constitution and re-interpret it as it sees fit.

How come people are against a liquid form of legislation when it concerns this matter but have no problem with the bill of rights being liquid?...sounds a little hypocritical.

Thats just the same thinking that has got the Middle East in trouble...
If you send everyone into military training and youe entire country knows how to strip and clean varrious weapons blindfolded then you end up with a nation FULL of people trained in combat and with knowledge of how to kill without remorse...

You're saying that anyone of military background is a remorseless killer? Most of my familiy, my friends, their friends and families have been, will be, or are in the military now, and I don't know ONE who would use his or her combat skills in a civilian situation.
How about this: if we do not force everyone to serve in the military we will be creating a race of pacifistic dolts who will turn the country over to Canada in their attempt to bring peace to Texas.
I agree with where you're coming from, but your logic is just plain stupid.

Switzerland and a few other European countries do, with an option to serve in "Civil Service" instead.. Disaster relief work etc.

as if everyone in the military gets training in combat tactics or how to kill without remorse. there's lots of people in this country who kill people everyday and they've never even been in the military.
