I think you might be a bit confused about the monetary aspect if you're looking to do all this for $10k.

700watt of solar is pretty over the top.

I took a couple weeks and went cross country in my car.  Pretty much just found someplace safe to park and slept in the drivers seat.  It was awesome and I too have been trying to find ways to live that nomadic lifestyle.  It seems completely feasible as long one is humble enough and really desires that kind of personal freedom.  Hope you make it happen!

The problem with going back is that it gets continually harder each time.

After spending months living such a lifestyle, not everyone can just "slot back" into a job to resupply.

The best work that's compatible with this lifestyle IMO is fruit picking and other farm work. Seasonal, spontaneous and contract based. You can do a few picks per year, blast out some 100 hour weeks and earn some big $$.

I would highly advise against trying to go back into the cities and getting a standard job.

Maybe after a while, if I can't find any other means of making :money:, I'll get a real job.

van = up to $4k
solar panels = 750w for $3-3.5k a couple hundred more for batteries (who knows, if i calculate that i only need one or two panels the cost comes down)
video game console/game = $300
various racks, shelves, mounts, kitchen stuff, storage, lights, carpet, insulation, tools, privacy curtains, etc = $1000?

tv = have it
computer = have it
mattress/blanket/pillows = have it
clothes = have it
bike = have it
motorcycle = have it
couch/seating = have it

portable internet (no subscription required...wifi hotspot active) = free
food = free or cheap enough to live long and well on
water = free :lol:
trees and clouds (pun?) = free

I have no desire for the spirit, only for the limitless life of leisure and the gratification of the senses.

It cost me roughly 1,000 bucks.  The vast majority of that was gas (7k miles) though I did stay in a hotel room 2 nights and at a campground twice as well.  I had the means to cook my own food so that saved me alot of money.  I could've stretched it out much longer if I had moved slower.

You have your priorities are VERY messed up.

You're spending more on an electrical system then the actual vehicle. 90% of your budget should be going towards the best van possible.

Batteries will run more then a few hundred, especially with a 750W setup and wanting big LCD's and other intensive gear. You will need a regulator...  and since most/all of your appliaces are AC, you will also need an inverter.

I sure as hell wouldn't pack up and leave society with a $4000 van, not for the long term. I would personally spend $9000 on the van, buy a single panel and use very modest electricity. Even with a 750W system, you're going to get a massive shock at how much electricty all this fancy stuff uses. When I go out bush and setup a solar panel, I use a 7 inch laptop, an 11 inch TV and headphones.

Where's your refridgerator? I purchased mine a few months ago (for my off-the-grid setup later this year) and it costed me $1600.

interesting chubba.  if i'm making any mods to a van then i need it to be a solid van, you are right about that.  criticism is good...i can't afford to make mistakes learning everything firsthand.  much more research and development is going to go into this crazy scheme...and if i stick around and save $$ for a couple years my budget will get bigger too.

refrigerator?  i've got a super small wine refrigerator meant for 10 bottles or so.  i think that would work well.  and if the lcd screen is going to use too much power i'll just use my 22'' computer flatscreen and/or a projector.

any problem can be solved...at least any problem related to bumming around in a van.

You REALLY want a fridge/freezer. Not saying it's impossible to live with just a fridge, but you are making your life much harder, especially if you're not a very good cook.

You have to check the rating on these appliances. First it's AC, so you have to factor in the power lose when going from DC to AC. Items designed for use on the grid are often very power hungry and it's not uncommon for small wine/bar fridges to still chew 1kw+ of electricity a day.

Sure it cost a shitload ($1600 for mine), but it's a DC fridge/freezer that runs off ~0.4kw/h a day. Your fridge is on of the biggest investments in an off-the-grid lifestyle and definitely requires a bit of thought.

Less 32inch LCD's and more life saving appliances TODAY :vaped::vaped::vaped:

Get a diesel and convert it to bio-diesel. All you'd have to do is carry a filter tank with you and you could get free gas at almost any restaurant in the country. Most of them are happy for you to take their grease for free, they have to pay to dispose of it otherwise. Conversions are relatively cheap. It would pay for itself within a couple weeks.

I don't know of many people who have had any long term success with this. It is very difficult to do, especially while living perpetually on the road.

Although i would welcome being proved wrong if anyone has any examples?

My friend has been doing it for years. He has a bigass truck with a tank in the back. He rarely gets turned down to empty grease traps.
He hasn't had to pay for gas in like 5-6 years, the exhaust may smell like french fries and chinese food, but it's clean burning/zero? emissions, and uhhh... he doesn't pay $4 a gallon for gas. I don't see where you can go wrong really. If it became more mainstream then you could get biodiesel at any gas station

It can be done and i will not argue that restaurants are happy to have people take their grease.

What i am saying is that the conversion/filtration process takes time and materials and wouldn't be necessarily easy being perpetually on the road. If you were to do this - you would need to have a homebase from where you could manufacture your fuel

On top of that, from my understanding - engines get "clogged" by using imperfect homemade biofuel.

Besides that - who-ever is doing this needs to have a very solid mechanical aptitude, plus time and tools to finik with such a setup.

Nice idea - but wholly impractical for most folks.

I'm not an expert on it but from my understanding, he just runs the grease through a 3 stage filter first to remove any chunks or impurities and then adds methanol and lye I think. Certainly more practical if you have a homebase though for sure.
