What a stubborn cunt. Cemented a few gigs though.

So I was playing a trad guitar session in my local bar tonight with four others. They play there once every 1/2 weeks and I hang out with one of them.

I brought my guitar up and sat in with them after asking my bud if I could. They put me on to the only acoustic plugged into an amp for a version of 'Wish You Were Here'.

They were all singing praises saying I had to join their band. Except one guy. He has a serious chip on his shoulder. Months ago,I was playing with them. I took one of their guitars out of the cases(after asking),and joined in. Halfway through,I was after moving onto banjo and I was done with it,passing it back to this guy.

"DID YOU PUT THIS OUT OF TUNE!?:mad2:",he says.

"No,it was in tune when I was playing it",I said.

"IT'S NOT A TOY,DO YOU HAVE 3000E TO PAY FOR IT IF YOU BREAK IT!? IT'S NOT A TOY!"

"WHAT!? I HAVE A GUITAR AT HOME AND I KNOW HOW TO TREAT IT! I TREAT ALL GUITARS LIKE I'D TREAT A BABY!"(lots of drink consumed before anything happened both times).

"WELL WHY DON'T YOU BRING IT UP SO!"

FYI,this guy is in his 50's.

..................

Fast forward to tonight,I'm playing lead guitar throw an amp while the others are playing the chords and the banjo lead. Things are going well. We are clicking good.

Not long after one guy was praising me,that guy stopped playing altogether and said "I CAN'T PLAY WITH YOU! YOU'RE PLAYING THE WRONG NOTES!"

"No I'm not....."

"YOU'RE PLAYING TWO OCTAVES HIGHER! HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO PLAY TO THAT!?:mad2:"

"I was just adding something extra to the chords. You know,adding to the music..."

"WE'RE NOT PLAYING ROCK AND ROLL! WE'RE PLAYING BALLADS!"

blah blah blah.......

We finish the session on a really good note,playing a lot of tunes satisfactorily.

I stay on my own just playing away as they went for a smoke or whatever and the guy comes and sits down next to me.

He assumes the roll of the mentor. "Do you understand where you went wrong?

"I thought I played well..."

"You've a natural talent but you NEED to learn music!

You need to understand what the lyrics mean and where they come from and where the notes come from!. You don't even sing and you don't play songs!"

"Ya,I just kind of play leads on top of songs..."

"BLAH BLAH,DO YOU WANT TO BE A GOOD PUB GUITARIST OR A GOOD MUSICIAN?"


"A good musician..."

"YOU NEED TO LEARN THE THEORY!"

"Jimi Hendrix didn't learn music and he's the best there is..."

"SO YOUR AS GOOD AS JIMI HENDRIX!?"

"I didn't say that,you JUST said it".

"HAVE YOU EVER CRIED PLAYING GUITAR!?


"No"

"YOU'VE NEVER FELT MUSIC!"

"Just because I don't cry doesn't mean I don't feel music. If I didn't feel it I wouldn't play! I wouldn't cry at a funeral or anything. I tend to bottle things up..."

"SO YOU'RE A HARD MAN! YOU'RE ONLY A FOOL!"

Me,"I can't(do this anymore),you're a retard".

I grab my pint and get up to walk away.

"YOU LITTLE SHIT!(grips my neck and spills my pint).who are you calling me a retard!"

I pushed him backward,spilling a pint at the bar.
"Get you're hand off me!"

I had an empty glass in my hand that could easily have brought the situation to gutter level but I thought better of it.

There was a lot of separation and holding back. I was calm straight away. Most agree that he's a retard so I know I wasn't in the wrong.

So what would you guys think? Would you have snapped or what?

i would smashed the glass over the fuckers head, i have a short fuse when it comes to people getting physical with me. other than that im impossibly chill and non violent, but for some reason, if someone touches me the wrong way, i momentarily lose it.

I used to have the shortest fuse. My intake of weed and the sense of sereneness I think I've gained from tripping has mellowed me out.

That's two aggro situations I've been involved in in the same pub in the last three days.

Xmas eve,I headlocked two guys,holding them back from hopping on to a fight between two fellas. A guy got glassed then alright though. Blood all over my pants and the pool table. Great Xmas spirit by those lads all the same.

But this fool,DID YOU EVER CRY PLAYING GUITAR!

THAT DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING YOU ILLOGICAL SPASTIC!

If this is an accurate explanation of what happened. (which I have every reason to believe that it is)
It sounds to me like he is threatened by your ability perhaps. :shrug:
Perhaps he thinks you are trying to take away his 'glory' or whatever or even trying to muscle him out.
Whatever the case, it sounds like an insecurity on his part causing him to react that way.
Unless you've doinked his teenage daughter or something like that. lol.

It's like he was the only one playing 'diddle diddle' on the banjo and then I came and started playing 'diddle diddle doo' on the guitar.

The funniest part is I'll be playing with him the next time they're up there.

I'm sure he'll come out with more gems.

he's ridiculous. if you get carried away and cry while you're singing or playing it interferes. most good musicians just put the feeling into the music. homeboy is probably jealous of you.

donno what to tell you, guess just stay away from him as much as you can and don't listen to his bullshit?

Now, I'm not trying to justify his actions and I don't know you and I'm not trying to judge you with this post.

With that said, there is a lot of unspoken protocol amongst pub gigs and since I don't know jack shit about your level of playing, I'm just going to assume that he's a good player and you're a young kid that thinks he knows everything.  Is it at all possible that he really was trying to give you advice?  Even if it was drunken, misguided and a little rude?  I wouldn't let anyone else come up onto my sets while I was playing - its my gig, let me play my music - unless EVERYONE agrees to it.  Maybe the man just really didn't want you playing on his guitar.  Some people are overly sensitive about their equipment.  I've yelled at people for perceived disrespect of my musical equipment more than once when the other party and others around though it was silly.  It doesn't matter, its my shit, stay off.  That is not only my lifeblood, its my sanity.  The two things I hold dear.

Also, when he was trying to "go all mentor".. again, maybe he was really trying to give you advice, even if it was in a shitty way?  Its hard to tell from here.  Some advice I give people sounds like mystic bullshit and I'm sure if I was at a pub gig and a little tipsy it'd get even more jive.  Gotta remember that there are 2 sides to every coin and you aren't always right.

Again, I could be wrong and you could be the next Jimi, but I doubt it.  Learn to take criticism and deal with artist eccentricity.

Okay,I should give more details about the situation.

It's a father and son,the sons friend and the fathers friend(that guy).

I text my bud early on asking could I sit in. I've played with them about 10 times or so. I brought MY OWN guitar up and sat in.

I heard today that my friend tried to reason with him last night and the guys problem was he thought I was acting cocky. I can assure you,cockiness is not a part of my personality.

Three of them play chords,none of them play lead over the top. That's the way they always do it. I play lead,I played lead before I ever played a chord.

It definitely adds a decent layer to the music and they all said so,even him.

I was also told he's always pissed drunk before he plays which also holds weight. It's as if he thinks he's the be all and end all of music and nobody else can be right.

He said,"where do you see yourself in ten years?"

"To be honest,I haven't the faintest clue,I don't have many ambitions".

He :facepalm:'s

He was trying to give advice and I'm always open to suggestions,I'm not narrow minded or stubborn but when he was reasoning like he was,what the fuck could I say to him?

Everyone agreed with me that he's a cunt. They said I went a bit far calling him a retard but there is only so much leeway I can give before I call someone out.

I'm only human. :shrug:
