Anyone raise chickens?
    #11632901 -

I'm thinking about getting a few chickens for both the eggs and the learning/life experience for me and my daughter.  After doing a bit of research I think I'm leaning towards a Brahma breed of chicken.  Not fast egg layers, but docile and friendly supposedly which would be good for my little girl.

Any tips or advice, or just fun stories would be great!

I thought of doing the same thing but my wife isn't all for that idea. I was thinking of doing it despite what she said, but i haven't really looked into it yet.

I raised chickens in the suburb all my life.

Spend the most of your time on getting the best enclosure. It's not rocket science though, you will have no problem.

Learn some seriously eggy recipes, because a good chook will give you 1 egg per day min.

Chickens are good.  They're good in all weather.  Get a mobile coop, so you can move them around the yard at different times, so that they can pick bugs and shit out of different places.

Make sure they have water, and make sure they have food.

It's a good idea.  Fresh eggs and then fresh chicken meat when you want to lighten the load.  Get a cock, though, too so that the 'colony' is balanced.  All hens won't know what to do with themselves without a man to keep them in line.  As far as chickens go, anyhow.

  Make it happen, pa.

A couple years ago we had black australorps in the backyard of the punk house i lived in.

We had 4 hens and on average they each laid 3-4 eggs per day 6 days of the week. Needless to say, we had waaaay more egg's than we could eat.

They essentially ate our compost and we fed them chicken pellets and seeds once in awhle.

It was sort of cruel the way we kept them, in a hardpacked dirt yard with very few bugs and no grass or anything. We built them a house but they didn't use it. Just nested together under the porch in the straw... when it was like minus 30C.

Definitely pretty much a zero maintenance animal - they will live off your food waste and eat everything. They shit everywhere and its really gross but awesome fertilizer.

I ended up moving them to an island where i lived for a couple months, i made their pen off our balcony in the tall grass and they totally trashed all the tall grass and reeds that made up our backyard. Ripped up the ground which got all muddy when it rained and in general it looked like shit...

I then gave them to a farm with a rooster!

Great idea, chickens can create some awesome fertile soil, you can combine this with gardening after you move the enclosure.

If you have spare time to raise chicks and can kill/prepare a chicken yourself, you can put a big dent in your grocery bill.

I still struggle killing them, I do it from time to time... but I get really attached to my chickens, they're really friendly and interesting animals.

ive raised them most of my life... there easy to take care of but i dont suggest getting them if you dont have a yard for them to walk around... fuck anyone who keeps chickens or any animal for that matter locked up in little cages

you gotta be careful with the males though especially springtime they fight like crazy ive witnessed a few deathmatches. Then they fuck the hens and if you dont keep an eye on the hens they dissappear and come back with like 30 chicks

all in all though you just need some cracked corn and water and they take care of all the ticks and insects around.

I have a large yard, but a couple of dogs that worries me.  I was thinking of having a fairly spaceous coop and run, but then putting the dogs away for a couple hours every day or so and letting them roam around the yard too.

I'm considering it.  Portland zoning laws allow you to have up to 6 hens in your backyard without a license.  I don't currently eat a lot of eggs, but I think I could adjust pretty easily.

One of the best hobbies I ever had until I met this website and started growing oysters.
One rooster can take care of 10-15 hens. Too many roosters=sore hens.
If you can do it, I highly recommend it.
Watch out for predatory animals though. You will be surprised at how many animals like a good chicken dinner.

YO My neighbor has 30 chickens and some hens and the Hens are fucking vicious.

They have these hooks on the back of their legs like hook thumbs, and her kids get attacked sometimes.  They got so mad at their crazy attacking hens that they killed them on turkey day.

I have one named Shishki in my freezer

Oh yea, DONT NAME THEM, cause you'll start to get all mushy when the time comes to chop their head oft
