Well first contact usually depends ok looks, unless one goes through "friends channel" there is no chance to let the her know your other qualities before you ask her out.
Hence self image probably helps.

Thought I don't think self image is necessary related to liking looks of oneself or others of the same sex.
For example thinking males are ugly and getting attention from females gives one self confidence / healthy self image on the assumption that they are females and look different at a male then you do.

Make contact in your own way with everyone.  The people who can see past outer appearance will go beyond that first contact.

It makes no difference if you are good-looking or not, really.  Make contact in your own way.
