The Buddhist and the Taoist

Somewhere deep within the mountains of ancient China there lived two hermits: one Buddhist and one Taoist. Every few years they'd get together for the purpose of excercising their speaking skills. During one of these meetings they reminisced together about a flower festival they'd both visited years ago, and realized that this was the day of the festival. One of them suggested "Hey, why don't we project down to the festival and check it out?" So they meditated into a trance and flew out of their bodies down to the village where the festival was happening. After strolling around looking at all the beautiful flowers they agreed that they'd both go look for a flower which best represented their understanding of the universe. The Buddhist found a lily blooming strongly with only a small unopened portion in the center still holding back its mystery. The taoist picked a chrysanthemum and admired its layers upon layers of petals hiding successive mystery and wonder. They showed eachother their finds and then decided it was time to get back to their bodies. When they emerged from their trance states back in the mountains, the taoist had the chrysanthemum lying on his lap.


I was told this story earlier today. It's actually a joke, but I needed it explained before I got it. Anyone get it?

well, the "joke" kinda makes fun of buddhists. The taoist goes on his journey with his entire being, whereas the buddhist focuses only on his spirit aspect.

Another thing someone told me to explain the difference between buddhist and taoist: the buddhist rises to the heavens looking up into the sky leaving his body and the world behind and the taoist looks down into his body and rises up through a foundation rooted in his body and nature.

I find these kind of things explain taoism and buddhism the best. Anybody else know any?
