Depression
    #11374952 -

So many seem to be depressed recently (just have a look at the 'Physical & Mental Health' forum)
The fact so many are going through it shows (IMO) that we are really growing as a species
All the crap we've been trying to sweep under the rug is starting to stink

So i thought id make a thread where we can possibly share experiences of going through depression & most importantly how we came through it
Whether it be with psychology, spirituality, philosophy etc...

Skip my story if you wish...

My story:

The only real depression i've been through was wanting to understand life, wanting to understand the totality of existence, the universe
Especially wanting to understand why we all, as beings in this universe, have to suffer?
Whats the point of it all?
Whats all this suffering about?

I feel i overcame this by logically finding the answers to my questions, but first by understanding what the questions i wanted answered actually were.
Alot of the time people can be depressed but they fail to pinpoint what they are actually depressed about so it continues as a subconscious process.
Most of the time when we are at a moment of penetrating into what the depressions actually about we'll run away, go & stuff our face, get high, have sex, any sensual gratification will do..
As long as it covers this pain for a little longer...

The fact that i pinpointed that i wanted to know 'what its all about' meant i was able to then rationally discriminate what its all about

I started to see that all of this crap passes, none of it lasts for long
So the crap that passes can't be what its all about, that if something passes, it can not bring lasting happiness or even really be considered real or true
So to stop mentally clinging to it all

Then i came to see that theres something that does not pass, an Awareness, an eternal presence that is blissfully not attached to anything
And that i myself, in essence, am that presence
This fully cured all possible depression

So far so good...

 You're the classic example of the broken record. That's kind of  depressing.

Looks like this thread is just a set up for another sermon on ultimate reality and how you found out what it is.:monkeydance:

Actually I mostly pick apart what he sez.

This is part of how I debate contentions without evidence.

Here's my position. No human can know ultimate reality. If they say they do then one of three things is true imo.

They are the creator.

They are delusional.

They are lying.

I offer the opportunity to provide evidence to dispute any of this.

would be much more purposeful in a forum of the non-internet variety considering people can't really hear or see anything human on a computer screen... but you DO KNOW THAT. right?

the internet is the best way to debate someone with evidence

its very hard to recall all the facts in person and put it into a comprehensible context

the internet allows you to present your evidence and research in real time

and not know who you're talking to in most cases.

so unless you are arguing politics or religion for example... you would not need to debate or have evidence. psycholgy, sociology, ontology (alpha and omega, infinite or finite arguments) are all up on the chopping block while on the interent then?

you don't have to know who you are talking too to debate the facts

in fact forming opinions about what the person believes or who they are can lead you into assumptions

I prefer to stick to the facts but I do on occasion venture into personal perception

I have yet to find a topic I cannot debate online

if the truth is on your side you'll find what you need

I'll agree that it seems likely that no human can know every thing about ultimate reality, but what's to prevent someone from knowing a few true facts about the Universe?

Also, wouldn't ultimate reality include the fact that no human can know ultimate reality, then?  Your very statement is contradictory, unless you consider yourself a reptoid rather than a human.  :satansmoking:

You can only know something if there is enough objective evidence. Everyone who says they know the meaning of life or some such other crap has no evidence nevermind concrete evidence to back themselves up, it is only seen from subjectivity.

well, there aren't any facts about what's in people's head (or at least the possible root) or about what doesn't exsist so... they are without evidence, unless you want to clarify what you percieve as evidence.

and also, decypher is right... SHMA!!

Based on whose standards?  Objectively speaking, there is no way to prove that I am conscious, yet I know it based solely on my subjective experience.

And this would be different in person? Tell that to the millions of spouses who were shocked to find out who their partner really was and what they were up to years later.

Actually you can't really know all about anyone including yourself imo. The internet works just about as well as anything else.

which is a completely subjective opinion without the evidence to back it

Better to say you have the best chance of knowing based on a preponderance of objective evidence.

I always assume I could be wrong

but that doesn't keep me from attempting to learn more and more

I tend to learn the most when I get opposition

being able to accept when your wrong and owning up to that fact is the most difficult and essential part in navigating the truth imo

let me just make a quick point about faith

I see faith more as confidence then I do blindly following something without the facts
