One big cap should be enough, so hopefully it get big, but seriously you should do alot of research on amanitas, they are not to be messed with, you can kill yourself very easily if you don't know what you are doing. There are two chemicals that get you high in Amanitas, both are considered neurotoxins.  When the mushrooms are dried, and heated, the more dangerous chemical breaks down into the safer and more potent chemical, but they can still be dangerous.  When I tried Amanitas I did alot of research and ended up making a tea, because the extra heat along with lemon juice helps break down any of the dangerous chemical that is still left in the dried caps.

So i should make a tea? Are the effects similar to psilocybin?

The effects are quite unique, very pleasant if you don't over do it.  Felt like the body buzz of alcohol, but without the fucked up mind.  Very dreamy feeling, feel light.  As for the tea, I only messed with Amanitas a couple of times, I am no expert, I really suggest you do some research, but what I did was use a tek off of erowid I believe, simmered the cap in water for a good 20 minutes I think with two bags of tea (constant comment cuz it tastes good), also added some lemon juice to speed up the reaction.  Final product doesnt taste too bad, it's not the most pleasant taste but you can get it down no prob, and it stays down, add sugar too.

Not "mush" id say. A medium to larger cap to start off is what i hear. Take it slow with that one, then see what works for your body. They're tricky.

Happy hunting

Interesting find - it looks like the Amanita Pantherina from my field guide. My book reckons it has similar effects to Amanita muscaria but is slightly different because it can be potentially fatal!

You should post up some more details about it to get a better ID on it.

I would be interested in your results if you did try and replant/move it - I was thinking that if you were careful and dug a massive patch around and below it without disturbing it and then replanted it in similar well watered soil in your back garden then perhaps it wouldn't notice the change of scenery and would happily mature to full size.

I was just reading about the legend of pantherina death here

Am I missing the picture with the brown color and collar like ring around the base?

There's no way to get an accurate ID yet from the pictures this guy has posted.

Shockvalue You mis-quote me. I was saying it looks like the Pantherina from my guide. I have been reading it cover to cover recently and the pics are similar I thought (or maybe it's just my bad eyes combined with some blurry pics!).

Agreed more details are needed to properly id it.

Whoever - Yeh the whole muscimol debate intrigues me - but most of what I have read seems to be negative towards it. I have never had the balls to try agarics - I have found and dried loads in the past but the potential risks always put me off - that and the fact that a nice big fat joint always seemed to be the safer option!

I foolishly (?) threw a big box of them away because no one else would take them with me and also because I was relying on only my own research to id them. I wish I was aware of this site before I did!

Didn't mean to come down like a ton of bricks there.  Just have to be careful with ID'ing Amanitas, especially with an eager fellow new to them like the original poster

Yeah, schisty, i think the idea of them was glorified for me through some shamanic association with intriguing Carl Castaneda stories from days of youth, where i figured i'd find a guide some day into the netherworlds.  Since hearing more about them, i remain curious, but they've lost a lot of that imagination aura, as though they had something important you can't get anywhere else.  Don't even remember if his stories even dealt with them, or just peyote or whatever, but as my story unfolded i found out, under some unusual conditions, all of this human drug madness is really just that, a symptom, moreover.

But I'll try these muscaria sooner or later just because, need-to-know.  I'll also sign up for World's Oldest Mushroom Questions when i'm 65 or 70, save the world some medicare.

@shock, thanks for keeping us on the straight-and-narrow, forget sometimes, you're right.

But, then again, i'm starting to think there's a bit much overwrought undue paranoia about mushroom ingestion.  Like, the deadly amanitas are either ghostly pale or sickly green aren't they?  What's wrong enough to caution with the rest of them, tummyache?

Today's update!!! Getting bigger but still lacking redness... could be Amanita Pantherina. Still not sure...

if you got something like a shovel with which you can take a whole big chuck of the dirt bellow and around it without disturbing the shroom nor the dirt directly around it you might be able to grow it. It doesnt seem too far fetched to me, but I am also new at this

Hey Stevey.... My first year hunting and I too found about 15-20 fly agarics in my local forest (within london). In terms of consumption.... it pays to do your research. Whilst they probably wont kill you they do contain toxins and need to be prepared in the correct way. Just spend a couple of hours a day reading up on their preparation and you'll be fine.  They take a long time to dry out and with these the prefered method is to use the oven with the door slightly cracked open.  I have mine dried and powdered (36g) but am yet to try them. The average dose for fly agarics is about 12.5g (dried).  Hope this helps and just to let you know if you want to find more look for silver birch trees .... they are very common underneath or around these.

Hope this helps you out abit. ..... Just got my first bunch of libs today just outside of London (200 ish) so come check them out on the UK thread.

Rich

Amanitas are mycorrhizal, meaning that they are symbiotic with their host trees.  Unless you move the tree and the mushroom together, you're not going to have much luck growing it.
