Are tattoos desecration or expression?
    #11332001 - 10/27/09 04:10 PM (8 years, 25 days ago)

I have been thinking lately..

Are tattoos justifiable in a spiritual sense?

Many say they are a desecration of your body, others see it as a way of expression.. I look at them as an art form (someones expression through art), a sacred one at that. Tattoos have been done for thousands of years, one of the oldest being around 5300 years ago.. from what I could find.

I was just interested in what other people think about them.

To me it's a lifelong reminder of what i hold dearest in life. So, an expression.

I like the 'true love' tattoos.

You know, the heart around the words:

"I love Mary  Donna  Amber.

Those are by far the most meaningful.

If I got one it would say - "I love Mary Jane", inside of a pot leaf. Although I'd never get that..

I don't see how a tatoo could be spiritually consequential... ever

Justifiable to whom? Is there something/someone that we have to explain our actions to? :strokebeard3:
I couldn't tell what you meant with the spiritual sense, but since I am free to do what I want with myself I don't think I have to justify any of my actions.
I love tattoos because they look good and I can pick any design that comes to mind. All the experience from the searching for inspiration, to picking a place to have it done, and actually doing it is an interesting journey.

Well I have two tattoos, one on my both sides of my throat(outline of vocal cords) and a Lion of judah on my calf...both are considered very sacred and spiritual in my culture(Rroma gypsy) I received the vox cords when i first turned 13 while living in Bosnia. I got the lion from my brother while living in south africa. Both were done "Tamoko" style

That's awesome! Was there a specific reason why at 13, or did you choose to, and what does it represent (the neck tattoo)?

I too, have a tattoo, inbetween my shoulder blades.

A tatoo can be an expression of your commitment to a concept or philosophical position. So sure it can be spiritual in nature.

Its not a desecration of anything to create art using your body as a canvas for your expression.

Only something as mindlessly irrational as religion would posit such a fallacy as to suggest that ones body is desecrated by ones artistic expression.

Hmm, I'm again getting ahead of myself apparently.. I couldn't really tell you who it would be that would justify that .

To all the rest, that's very true. I believe the same, actually.

It was chosen from my father, and the elders in our family at the time. So I didn't really have a choice, but over time it has grown on me.(like i can do anything about it now?) But the throat one represented the 'throat chakra'(my family heritage has a lot of eastern influences)..the lines inside the cords represent each lifetime, or how many times i have been incarnated. Its suppose to represent a Voice unto God.
It took a really fucking long time, i think around 26 hours total. I remember laying down on a blanket and having my neck stretched out, then they brought out a sharpened goat's bone, and small hammer...dipped it in some ash and went to work...it was incredibly excruciating and I had passed out during the middle. I awoke a little after they were finished. Now i forget its even there.

There was one guy in the Navy who had a thing for swallows. He had around 8 of them on his back, chest, calves, etc. Anyway, when I met him he was in his 40s and the tattoos had just become ugly black smudges and looked awful.

He decided to get them removed and this was long before laser removal was available. I believe it was done with a coarse salt scrub which is quite painful. When done, the ugly black smudges were replaced with ugly white patches. Yay!

Personally, I would never have a tat nor a piercing, but that is just me. To each his own.

While a tat certainly has meaning to the owner, I see nothing spiritual about it. Of course, 'spiritual' is a vague catch-all that means whatever you want it to mean.

I would like to have temporary piercings for aesthetic reasons; part of me likes to express my feminine side (a side that I think all men have, BTW), and I feel that, for example, a diamond earring would fit the bill quite nicely. :money:

Just like I would probably never marry, I would probably never get a tattoo. :shake

Certainly it is an ill defined phrase. Personally 'spiritual' means something of high value that increases the happiness in my life.

For example, great sex in the evening and waking up to a good breakfast in the morning is one of the most 'spiritual' values in my life at the moment.

Tattoos have been in existence for thousands of years. Through its aging process, it has evolved to fit many purposes. Nowadays, they are what the tattoo-bearer conceive and perceive them as.

I think it depends on the tattoo.  I consider all my tattoos to be forms of expression, but I've seen some tattoos that I could only describe as desecration.
