Contamination? (w/ pics)

Please take a look at these two pics. This is the 2nd cake to get this white substance within 48 hours of birthing. The first one I dunked and rolled (and then subsequently tossed), this one I just dunked (in case the verm was bad). I've been as careful as I can be about sterility (I suppose I could scrub the room with disinfectant..). Are these tainted or ok?

Well, I dug around the archives and it *appears* that this may be ok. I read that dunking often produces white, foamy mycellium. But some positive reinforcement wouldn't hurt! :wink: :laugh:

I have read the same thing somewhere along the line on a thread somewhere. But I am still in the process of waiting to even dunk and roll my first batch of cakes. This probably isn't the positive reinforcement you were looking for but that's all I got.

looks good to me. :imo:
if you are really stressed for an answer you can gently poke a part of it with a clean utensil(as a last resort!!!)

HealthyFruits - Yeah, I should've waited a few more days. This was a test case. I've got two more PEs that have been patiently waiting in their jars and look more robust then this one.

ill tell ya how..

PE often makes those nodules, sometimes they turn into fruits.. sometimes they just become big spongy masses, the good news is that they are VERY potent and edible :smile:

I had a couple a while back look similar and turned out fine.

Has anyone ever had this happen to one of their monotubs? cause I had a monotub of eq that started to look like this at about 90% colonized, eventually the whole top ended up looking like this and I threw it out.

dont poke it:shrug::facepalm: that wont prove anything

its mycelium cakes usually do this right after birthing before the first flush fluffy mycellium will come up sometimes due to really high RH or not enough FAE or the cake just hasnt decided it wants to fuit yet.. its fine dont worry the only thing i would suggest is to
roll it in verm.. if you are uncertain that your verm is clean bake it in the oven @ 350 for and hour or so or at least nuke it in the microwave... a verm roll will greatly improve your results!

Nexus, it's been dunked, but not rolled. Is it ok to roll at this point (can I just pour some verm straight onto the cake without having to take it out?)

i would only be wary if it starts secreting an amber liquid it seems almost as if it is a defence mechanism against bacteria or something.. thats not proven just something i thought about after noticing the buildup of metaboliates near the questioned area

thats just bad advice side by side studies show cakes rolled in verm have a much better yield and retain their moisture much better... no one can argue with that.. its not needed but is highly advisable.

yes but this one has already started to recover from birthing.. no need to stress it out.. roll it after the first flush..

i wasn't advocating poking it... but it would turn blue if it was mycellium.and every once in a wile you get those people that just keep asking cuz they just dont want to think its fine.call me dumb but thats how i see it. hence the (last resort!)
