They look purple when they blue eh? That's a new one. Your description isn't very good, but I've never seen a psilocybe with white gills myself, and don't recall reading of any. Take spore prints and check for a separable gelatinous pellicle, as it's characteristic of most psilocybes. Many mushrooms can resemble cyans to someone who doesn't know what to look for. Take spore prints and consult a mushroom ID guide if you're not 100% sure.

As for growing cyans indoors, it's pretty hit or miss from what I've seen. I've only heard of 2-3 successes, outdoor is the best bet, but I highly doubt you'll get them to flush this season outside.

I have found mushrooms like you have described in my area. I have not been able to identify them yet. The purple color is very distinctive. The spore print I took was white. Stem hollow and splinters when picked by hand. growing along walking paths under fir trees. I do not think they are active.

I believe they are Mycenas, my guess is Mycena pura.
See the pics in site, don't forget to see also the links at the end of the page, as this specie color varies pretty much.

Maia, do not the stems look awful thick to be a Mycena?

Just a question and/or observation>

I believe MAIA might be correct in saying that they're Mycena pura... Take a spore print and let us know how that comes out.

I was thinking they kind of looked like a young(because of white gills) Conocybe tenera, but you said the stems turn purple, so it may not be them.

From the mycenas i've seen or learned about, this particular specie does seem to have a thickier stem. Which is the size of that mushroom anyway ?

Spore print color will tell. If it's white it could mean a Mycena, if it's dull brown then it could be a Cortinarius sp., probably vanduzerensis.

Those are cortinarius for sure(about 95% sure)... Look at that webby veil, it's a dead give away. Not of any interest, could be toxic.

are these pelliculosa? [Re: mjshroomer]
    #1133914 - 12/11/02 11:57 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I have been finding a ton of mushrooms that look just like pelliculosa in flowerbeds around large rocks and trees in bark mulch on campus. I'm not sure if they actually are pelliculosa or not the spore prints are turning out black and the gills are either whitish, or a tanish brown varying with the individual mushroom. As they dry the mushrooms become a light tan color and the gills darken to a dark brown. Does this sound like pelliculosa? I don't have a digital camera but if these sounds like pelliculosa I can get a friend to take pictures for me. I would like some opinion before that step though due to the non-purple spore prints and the varying gill color. Thanks

Averagewhiteguy, the psilocybian mushrooms turn blue, not purple. Purple/brown to chocolate/brown are the color of the spore deposit of the genus Psilocybe. No magic shrooms tuen purple.

Many shrooms specoes posted on my website also have a page on bluing in the common species. check it out. http://www.mushroomjohn.com/species.htm

have a shroomy day,

those would be P. cyans, b. azurescens, P. stuntzii/s, P baeocystis, P. pelliculosas, P. semilanceatas, and P. cubensis, etc.

Others do get bliuing and some do not.,

Copelandia cyanescens and there family always stain intensely blue.
