ive read Ps. pelliculosa, sometimes appears after a woodland is logged out. my question that i cannot find an answer for on the net is: how long after the loggers leave, and which type of woodlands?.....
like for morels i know its 10-15 years hardwoods......

Hmmm.... I think there maay not be enough observation of this species to be able to specify a range of time, or type of tree, but who knows! If you are any good at IDing trees, maybe find some Ps. pelliculosa photos, and try to determine?

good idea curecat, well in a few pics i see oaks but most have conifers, mainly red pines.

this one is of a logging site, those logs appear to be red pines 50 years old, laying there dead for 5-15. the logs have ben flipped upside down and chewed up, so id say the loggers were there within a few months to a year.
anyone ever hunted this guy before? cant find much of Ps. pelliculosa, is it elusive compared to other forest actives?

Most clear cut logging sites in the PNW have become illegal over the last ten years due to environmental acts. While the logs are logged out, there is chemical spraying in many of the clear cuts as I have noted in other posts and then they burn and slash. Then the shrooms start to grow.

I have picked P. pelliculosa with @cro, Mycoguy, Chief Ill Eagle, Roadkill and his son, and we have seen helicopters dropping huge liquid amounts of chemicals from the air to clear-cuts. Some entrances to clear cuts in Washington, especially in the Kingston-Paulsboro to Port Angeles actually have warning signs saying the clear cut areas have been sprayed with chemicals.

Also, Kids ride their trail bikes into the clear cuts, some bring girls , smoke pot and get high and fuck out there and some target practice with daddies guns or even hunters are out there in the areas practicing target shooting. You
will hear them and sometimes see several arrive with different guns and bullet holes can be observed in old garbage and iceboxes dumped at the forests edge.

See the mushrooms in the trailed bulldozer pathways running along side of each other through the clear cuts, from side to side. These patches can run for miles in the open areas. The Alder trees grow for three years and then when the alder trees when they reach a height of 3-10 feet, the P. pelliculosas disappear began to disappear fromthe ground and the tree growth takes over. Driving around the areas you can see rows of alder growing on the left and right sides of the highways and even freeways throughout Western Washington and Oregon. This is because seeds fall from logging trucks bringing logs to the mills from the forests.






Here is one of Roadkills son finding a total of one P. pelliculosa in Kingston-Port Angeles near the Hood canal Bridge. Other similar habitats show thousands of Galerinas growing in places which should have P. Pelliculosa. In the 1970s, P. pelliculosa's were picked at Lake Tachenich (sp?) in Oregon.

In the fall months, Waerhauser sells mushroom picking permits, good for about two months and at a cost of $35-$40 dollars per permit., But then they pick the logging clearcut sites where you can go to., Usually those are sites for edible shrooms and the alders have already been over grown. They appear in the PNW when Cedars are logged out to logging companies. The shrooms will grow in the open areas and along roadsides in the clear cuts when the trees are from 2-10 feet in height

They also grow along side long alder logs lying on the ground before the bulldozers smash them up. Some becoming flat on the cap with age:






One final note, while there are perhaps hundreds of thousands of P. pelliculosas in these aras, the P. silvatica are few, one out of a thousnand maybe. And aas noted they grow only to the edge of the clearcuts. If you walk into the wooded areas form the clearcuts, after about five feet into the woods, the P. pelliculosas disappear. They love the woodchip, branches, mulch and logs. but sometimesw appear in small mulch patches int he city, but rarely and int he woods, like the cyans which also come form the woods. They are few. In the late 1970s, we found 18 Psilocybe cyanescens ona footpath form a clear cut about 18 feet into the woods and nevr again inthat area int he woods, although Alder is their favorite habitat.

Here are two more images of P. pelliculosa growing in grassy areas in the clear cuts forest edge.


And they also grow under and around the blackberry vines which began to appear after the growth returns to the clear cuts. These thorns are very uncomfortable. I usually place my knees on them before I notice they are there.

wow, thank you MJ. I always wanted to hunt these or semi's but I think the pelliculosa are gonna be a bit hard to find.

See the P. pelliculosa mushrooms. Go to the left or to the right of this shroom trail and there will be a similar trail of shrooms. You may have to climb a ridge and then go down into a clearcut, but they start around the end of October till December. See all the shrooms? These trails extend for miles into a clearcut which is from one to three years old.

wow, sounds like a beautiful place to be, id love to just camp there for a month. so are areas with this prolific occurrence of Ps. pelliculosa common among pnw clear cuts?

Buenos Dios mi amigo, I forgot to show the drying and dried image so f an hours picking.

So here they are

Not sure if I already showed the first imaeg of a smal pound buthere is one of fresh and then some drying to show variation in the species in the woods.I even have photos of other Psilocybe with active ingredients which have still not been worked on or identified. They sit in a herbariu8m somewhere near Guadalajara.

Ive just recently found a cut block dominated by these critters. They grow all through the sticks and slash ...noticed they didnt like the cedar trees planted in half the block....probably the roots...



anyways i picked 2 pounds yestetday.
