5-HTP side effects
    #11075007 -

I originally purchased 5-HTP because I had read good things about it, mainly for it being good for regulated a sleep schedule.  However, after I took 1 50mg capsule last night, I laid in bed for several hours with a racing mind and a racing heart.  I literally felt as though I had taken 150mg of caffeine, and it was fucking awful.

Three hours later, here I am awake, unable to sleep, and my heart is still fluttering.  What the hell??

I simple google search reveals nothing to be about this 5-HTP garbage besides it supposedly increasing serotonin levels.  Why is 5-HTP acting as a stimulant, and a shitty one at that?  Has anyone else gotten side effects from 5-HTP?

Any 5-HTP experiences are welcome.

Edit: and no, I am not on any medications.

Apparently 5ht2A antagonists promote sleep, not agonists.

You'd be better off taking the 5-htp during the day and taking a 5-ht2A antagonist at night.

extra serotonin in your blood is bad for the heart. l-typtophan is better because it only raises serotonin in the brain. I got the same fluttering heart feeling from 5-htp, I can't say it made me stimulated though.

I have also read that 5HTP can from the excessive serotonin in the blood cause heart damage. Also it is recommended not to take vitamin B with the supplement.

Interesting considering the 5-HTP I have has 10mg of Vitamin B6 in it...

Here is a interesting link you might want to pursue on the adverse effects http://yarchive.net/med/5-htp.html.

A quote from the link in relation to the b5 "Alas, one company I know packages their 5-HTP in 50 mg
capsules with 10 mg of B6.  They do this ostensibly so that 5-HTP
can be converted to serotonin in the brain.  Duh.  This insures
that any 5-HTP will get converted to serotonin in the liver
instead, and thus never make it to the brain.  Vitamin B6 is the
*LAST* thing you want in an 5-HTP product".

I am not a doctor and cannot assess the credibility of the information. But from personal experience with 5htp I have experienced heart racing and irregular beats. Im still young and since I stopped using 5htp the symptons have left.

I would see a doctor for advice if you want to continue with 5htp, and my purpose writing here is only to advise some caution.

It is necessary for your body in order to metabolize  it in to serotonin.

It is also necessary for the bigger chained amino acids like tryptophan to turn in to other forms of amino acids, melatonin, etc.

WARNING

"Do not take 5-HTP. It's converted (to variable extent) by the liver aryl
amino acid decarboxylase to serotonin (5-HT or 5-hydroxytryptamine), which
is a bad thing to have in your blood in large quantities. It causes cardiac
myocytes to proliferate, and that causes proliferate valve disease (a
problem seen in methylsergide overdose, old-time fenfluramine users, and
victims of midgut carcinoid tumors that make a lot of serotonin). And, BTW,
any serotonin that is made by the liver never gets into the brain, so it
does you no good there. Some 5-HTP does get into the brain (the same
transporter that gets tryptophan gets it in, but that doesn't work without
the COOH group) and is converted to serotonin there.  But you pay for that
with serotonin made outside the brain, which you want strictly controlled".

Nah, you just had a bad reaction probably. Nothing wrong with 5-HTP, it's actually beneficial in a lot of instances.

And what's with the don't touch any pill? Do you not smoke weed or take mushrooms? Double standards, LOL. Get real.

+1 for the reasons already stated.  Tryptophan is a bit more safe because there is more of a natural regulation in how much is converted to serotonin.  It's best taken with some carbs and no other protein at the same time.  Insulin from the carbs triggers the other amino acids to be shuttled into the cells while the tryptophan remains in the blood.  Some theorize this is one of the reasons people crave sweets.  They get a serotonin boost from the insulin.

I can't promise this will help with your sleep.  All of the effective drugs I have tried are addictive and have dependency and tolerance issues.  All of the OTC stuff seems too weak.  The only proven method I have found is being strict with my alarm and waking up at the same time every day, and kicking my own ass in the gym.

You don't find melatonin and kava effective?  Those are the two that definitely help for me.  5-HTP just leaves me laying in bed awake with my heart pounding.  I'm still not convinced either way with 5-HTP.  Anyone have any good links to back up what they said about it?

Well you can read my earlier link or possibly suffer from long term usage with damage to your heart valve.

Melatonin knocks me out initially but I always wake up a few hours later, in the middle of the night.  I know some people into life extension who take large doses of melatonin every night.  Supposedly after taking it for a few days it will allow you to sleep all night.  I'm still a little unsure of how it affects the rest of the body when used regularly.  I've read of it increasing prolactin which can result in bitch tits and overall is not a fun neurotransmitter, considering it competitively inhibits dopamine release.  Don't let me stop you from taking it, I haven't looked into it enough to say how much it affects prolactin.

Kava might put you out if you have some anxiety over something.  I never got much of an effect from kava personally.  I have a giant bag of the kona kava brand too.  It maybe relaxed me a bit but I had high expectations.  Maybe I didn't let it sit in the water long enough.

I've heard good things about valerian.  Magnesium around bed time can help since it's used in breaking down excitory neurotransmitters.  Don't take more than the RDA though.

There's a supplement called phenibut which is a prescription med over in Russia.  It can be used the same way you would use a xanax.  It sets on slower and lasts longer though.  Tolerance and dependency can become an issue.  I had a problem with tolerance but I never became dependent on it.

I just read of some people using the amino acid arginine at doses of around 5 grams to help them sleep.  I guess there is some science behind it because NOS levels peak as you become more tired and they decrease throughout the night.  I actually just ordered some so I can try this.

It's true.  A lot of my sleep issues are often anxiety related, and a dose of kava often helps until I wake up in the morning with my heart racing and horrible anxiety.  I have never noticed incredible results with melatonin, but it has helped me stay asleep once I get to sleep... that or basically I just want to sleep for 12 hours.

I've wanted to try ambien for a while, but I don't want to have "drug-seeking behavior" by just asking my doctor for it.

phenibut... why have I never heard of that?  I'm assuming it's not used recreationally at this point?  Am going to have to do some research on that one.

It's fairly well known in bodybuilding and supplement circles.  It's gained a bit of a dirty reputation.  I don't know how, but some people get dependent on the stuff.  I must be immune to benzo dependence though.  I used xanax to sleep literally every day for over a month and had no issue stopping.

As far as benzos, phenibut, and ambien.. I don't care for what they do to me long-term.  Once or twice in a week when I'm feeling restless is fine.  Used regularly they seem to have a negative effect on my mood.
