Hi all

I was out in the New Forest (UK) yesterday and while I was stomping around a field of horses, I saw some delightful-looking mushrooms growing  in the grass. From the time of year, I thought there might be a chance that they were liberty caps, so I picked a few to see if I could identify them when I got home. After a bit of web searching, I came across this site and after a bit of perusing, I don't think they are liberty caps. Nevertheless, I am now quite interested to know what they are! Could I have suddenly developed a new-found interest in mushroom hunting? Is this how it starts? lol





Habitat: Grass field with horses grazing. There were more growing near the horses' manure.

Gills: Sort of chocolatey brown

Stem: Off-white creamy colour, quite thin, a bit brittle

Cap: A rather lovely orange-brown, fading to cream at the bottom. 1 - 2cm in diameter

Spore print colour: Dark purple/black

Bruising: No colour change was observed.

Location: Picked in New Forest, Hampshire, UK

are the collected specimens (1st photo) the same as in the habitat shot? (2nd)

the collected ones are a Panaeolus species, the habitat shot ones probably are also, more pics needed

Hi Beege, thanks for the reply.

Yes, I think the habitat specimens are the same as the collected. At least, they were all growing in the same area and look very similar. I didn't take any more habitat photos, sadly.

Do you know if they are edible?

all mushrooms with a black spore print are eatable (meaning not toxic, though not necessarily good) some species of panaeolus are hallucinogenic, yours are not.
