Has anyone used the 50/50 Casing Tek without sterilizing or pasturizing it? Is it a bad idea to even try?

i never sterilize, but people say peat can contam easily...i guess it depends on how thick you apply the casing. if it's thin then you don't have to worry cuz the myc will colonize it fast enough. just use coir, it's so damn easy

Go to your local plant nursery, or even better go to your local pet store...coco coir is a bedding for lizards and animals like that, so almost every pet store sells it, its cheap for a brick of it and it expands like crazy with water...1 brick will last you a while!!

hmm, i don't know much about using coir .. do you still need to add lime or oyster shells to it? ie. what's the pH of coir? better yet, someone point me to a page about using coco coir as casing. that way i won't have to ask any more dumb questions about it

it works the same as Peat Moss/Verm plus lime....50/50+....use half coir/half vermiculite and a dash of lime....basically 1part lime to every 10 parts coir/verm

ph is a little higher than peat, maybe 5-6 for coir...i don't use anything to buffer and it works fine. haven't seen contams on it and i don't sterilize or pasteurize...but i do live in a sterile bubble
*edit* added this link working with coir
