let's talk monotubs

So, I've seen a lot of variations in hole size/placements on monos, and wondering what people find works best, why, etc.

looking up the same shit as you are, ive noticed people seem to like 2 - 2 inch holes right above substrate level and 2 at the top, i guess seeing co2 is heavier than air it gets pushed out the lower holes as fresh air comes in from the top holes, havent read it anywhere but thats what i figured from the placement of the holes.  so 2 - 2 inch holes above the substrate level and 2 at the very top on both sides of the container, those monotubs are the ones i found most often in the search function of monotubs..

if anyone has something better to say pleeeassee give your input, im tired of searching myself  lol

kinda like a shotgun, but adapted for a mono, or even a dubtub.

seems like a winner to me, but hey, im still new to this

EDIT: actually looking at it closer its a mini tub, but im sure it would work the same...

Yeah, those are the monstermitch style ones I believe.  But I think the mono was originally ohmatic's idea, and he uses only 6 much smaller holes, in different placements.  I suppose if the 21 gallon tub can maintain its humidity with 8 huge holes, it can only mean more FAE, which in theory is better, yet all of these designs have been shown to put out kick ass results.  Hmm, maybe I should just pick one?

4 holes on each long side. 2 above the sub and 2 at the top. On the short side, one at the top of each side.

well, I think that the shotgun monotub is the most proportionate design, meaning that it would provide for the same fae/rh on any tub size.  But 8 2 inch holes is something different proportionally depending what size tub is used.  But then again, maybe it doesn't matter that much?

That's a good usable design. :yesnod: Big enough for good yield, but doesn't take a huge pile of substrate.

I use 64 qt monos. I use 1 3/4" holes

i intend to experiment with it soon,

but have to start small with it first,

waiting to spawn to one of those minitubs for another week.

ill be trying it after i get a feel for the design

Not yet- next spring. Conditions here aren't suitable for experimentation in the winter.
But when I'm pulling 45-65 grams per flush,scaling up isn't really an urgent priority.

What I like a lot about your method of minitubs though, is that one doesn't have to prepare piles of substrate.
