size of monotub

i have 7 quarts of WBS that i am innoculating tomorrow, that i plan on spawning to 20 pounds of horse poo in a 30 gallon rubbermaid monotub. would it be better to make two monotubs, 15 gallons each with 10 pounds of horse poo and 3.5 quarts of spawn each? the reason is, i have heard that if i tried to use a 30 gallon monotub that it would contam easily...and i cant see any disadvantages to two 15 gallon monotubs, so what should i do? i also could just put them in two trays inside the monotub...incase one got contamd i would have a better chance of saving the half...
basically, is 30 gallons to big or unheard of? what are typical monotub sizes and does increasing the size(volume) increase the potential for contaminates?

I would do two. One problem is how long it would take to colonize. Also once a sub is 5 inches deep, your wasting substrate to make it any deeper.

I personaly dont see how one tub would colonize any slower than two considering that the spawn ratio will be the same. Just be as steril as possible and youll be fine.

I'd use 2. If you do get that evil green bitch (which is a good possibility if it's your first time with poo), she'll only get half your goodies. I use 18 gal tubs with 10 lbs of poo in each + 4Q of spawn = 5"-5.5", just right.

Here is a link to a Mono tub grow I did using a 33 gallon tub. It may have been 39 gallons, but I can't remember.

Well, see the thing is you don't want to get your substrate layer too deep. I wouldn't go more than 6''-8''. Also, I might be outdated on my info here, but your spawn ratio is measured in volume, you'd want no more than 1:10 ratio of spawn/manure. That comes to 17.5 gallons as the maximum amount of manure to spawn to using 7 quarts. Not sure, but 20lbs might be too much. You want to make sure you don't use too much or else it'll take too long and contam on your ass, unless it's an outdoor patch, but even then, it's not a good idea. I'd actually recommend you cut the spawn ratio down to 1:7 or so, it'll finsh a hell of a lot faster and cut the risk of contams. You cut your yields, sure, but unless you're growing to sell it really doesn't matter. Still, at a 1:7 ratio, that's damn near two pounds. If I still grew, that'd be enough shrooms to last me for years.
