myers briggs and the supernatural
    #1116879 - 12/06/02 10:45 AM (21 years, 3 months ago)

i was reading about my personality type (INFJ) and found some interesting facts... it's the rarest type, only 1-2% of the population is INFJ. but i thought maybe this forum might have a higher proportion, because of a couple of points in the personality description:

- INFJs' intuition borders on the paranormal. Further, they experience ESP, telepathy, visions, etc. more than any other personality type
- prophets and seers are apt to be INFJs

so what's your personality type? do you think the description fits you? you can do an internet search and pull up a lot of info on the personality types.

I don't know which type is the rarest but I am a INTJ, the Mastermind.

Click here for an entire description.

"They are rather rare, comprising no more than, say, one percent of the population."

Nice thread!

I'm looking over my notes on the Ganzfeld experiments, which have shown a high probability for telepathy (see my post here). What the Ganzfeld experiments have shown is that the ENFP type is the most likely to "pick up on" telepathy. Extraverts, it's hypothesized, get bored more quickly when looking inside, so they're more likely to pick up on outside transmissions than introverts. The most important things to have, though, are the Feeling and Perceiving qualities, rather than Thinking and Judging. Having previous experience with psi, mental discipline, and the FP personality account for up to 64% of telepathic individuals. But they're not talking about that online test, they mean the actual Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Everytime I take that online test I get a different answer. And we must remember that Carl Jung, who came up with the personality characteristics in the first place, on which the test is based, said that you can't truly classify an individual until about 20 years after s/he's died.

I don't mean to insult you, but I just re-took the test and I'm an INTJ as well. I hope this doesn't taint others' opinions of you.

Heres another description

INTJ here as well. I've found the description to be quite accurate as well.

I just took the online test that there's a link to on your description page. I'm one of the idealists(NF). 8-10% of the population. I don't have the money to check which specific kind I am. However I do know that I'm a highly introverted personality type(i guess that makes me an INF(?)). I don't think I'd pay for the service anyway

Does anyone know the difference between an INFJ and INFP

Jung may have come up with the types for that test but it was Aristotle, ages ago, that first described humans as personality types.

And Evolving I consider that to be a compliment for both of us.

Damn. I'm a healer, but I wanna be a mastermind, too!

That whole personality thing is boring. I used Evolving's link, answered the first 32 questions and then decided this sucks and anyone who is really willing to answer 72 silly questions must have a rather boring personality, anyway. So I first abandoned the test, but ten minutes later became nervous and finished it anyway (I'm wondering what that means for my personality). Then I didn't even bother to read both texts about INFP.

I just took that test and it says im an INTJ... I looked at the description for what that means, and it was fairly accurate, at one point extremely accurate...

I played chess for 10 years and that's exactly how I look at everything... hehe.. some of the stuff in there was accurate, some not.. so who knows...

I would rather be a healer anyday than a "mastermind".

As far as chess goes I have 60 books on it and have played for about 40 years.

Fair enough. I'll tell you my answers and you tell me yours. Then we can swap our personality next time we take the test.

I've played for 18 years. But then again, I'm 23.

Someday we should start a shroomery chess tournament somewhere.

Here's my take at your personality:

"Hi, f8L. Your personality type is RTFM. Some of your aspirations tend to be pretty unrealistic. At times you are extroverted, affable, sociable, while at other times you are introverted, wary and reserved. You have found it unwise to be too frank in revealing yourself to others. You pride yourself on being an independent thinker and do not accept others' opinions without satisfactory proof. You prefer a certain amount of change and variety, and become dissatisfied when hemmed in by restrictions and limitations. At times you have serious doubts as to whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing. Disciplined and controlled on the outside, you tend to be worrisome and insecure on the inside.

Your sexual adjustment has presented some problems for you. While you have some personality weaknesses, you are generally able to compensate for them. You have a great deal of unused capacity which you have not turned to your advantage. You have a tendency to be critical of yourself. You have a strong need for other people to like you and for them to admire you."

Taken from the Skeptic's Dictionary: Cold reading.

The human brain is the most complex thing in the universe, and to think that one could make a  statement about it by means of 72 bit of data is a bit silly, in my humble opinion. And it says a lot about the supposed "science" of psychology. I think it's actually more of a parody of science than a science itself.

For comparison, this post contains slightly  more than 10430 bit of data, and thus has about the informational value contained in 144 whole human brains.

These tests proove nothing.

Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?

They prove that certain people at some point felt it necessary to devise a way of compartmentalizing all human personalities into 16 general types.
Interesting, but in the end, rather useless.

I never said I won a game.

What is your rating and which tournaments have you played in?

As far as your analysis of psychological tests are concerned I see a little bit of bias.  Usually those in the hard sciences are the first to disparage it as belonging to the 'soft' sciences.  Is that where you are coming from?

How do you explain psychological profiling?
