Weird black spots/marks on tip of T. Bridgesii
    #11194110 - 10/06/09 02:17 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Hey, I have a new bridgesii (thanks to KBG ), but after I received it I noticed it has these marks/spots on the growing tip, I'm not sure what it is or if it will spread, it doesn't seem mushy at all.

It has no roots yet and I haven't watered it at all.

Here's 2 pictures of it:

This is the whole cactus:

Any idea what it is or what to do? Should I just cut it off? I'd rather have a pupping bridgesii than a dead one.

Thanks!

Also here is some cactus porn to thank you:

Baby bridgesiis (4 months old now):

The bottom of the cactus can still put out moisture and make it rot.
I would pull it up and check on it every once in a while.  Bugs will also like that spot when its under the dirt.

anyways the big spots look like damage from getting bumped and the little ones are just blemishes. No big deal

and the cactus in the third pic on the left looks dead?????

I personally want to know what's going on with the cactus in the back that looks dead.  HD says apparently it has just remained that way despite watering, and isnt growing.

Mine do it too. We're both Floridian as well. I think it has to do with turgor pressure and/or atmospheric humidity.. I have found nothing that prevents it, but it always heals too. I've received cuttings from California that did no such thing

Even when I graft, the stock Trichs always form a bubble of two that quickly turns black, the skin dies, then callouses over.. Every single time.

Its got to be water related, but as I said, no big deal.. It always heals and outgrows it.

Yeah, doesn't look like rot. The way it spots, all of my Trich's do the same thing, but it doesn't do any harm; just cosmetic. It should remain firm, if it gets soft, then you may want to consider some surgery.

The one in the back is a rooted bridgesii. I tried watering it but it won't absorb any water, it just stays dehydrated, I'm not sure what to do about it. It still grows but really dehydrated and slowly. There's no root rot or anything bad, it's weird.

How much root is actually on it? If the root system is still somewhat underdeveloped, it can take a while for it to take in any water. It could also be dormant for whatever reason.
Several people have posted about this, so apparently its common, but I've never experienced it myself

Normally when my cacti get that dehydrated they will take a while to plump back up, especially when it is very hot outside (it always is).
Try watering heavily, and then when the soil is completely and thoroughly dry, water again, and repeat until they plump up. As long as the soil is dry, you won't have to worry about rot.

I would mist it at night when the stomata are open as well.

This.

They can still take some time, but the new growth should be nice and plump, even if etiolated.

vascular damage.
taking a cutting, root rot, a hard bump in the area will cause it. It should dry up and turn white, don't bother cutting it off.
Once you get some nice roots, give it plenty of sun and it'll heal right up.

I already mist it almost daily at night since a few weeks, it doesn't seem to help

Nice! I actually didnt know that, makes perfect sense.

Know of any methods of prevention? I already cut with a razor, so I'm causing a minimum of vascular stress.

I've noticed some growers elsewhere do NOT get this problem with cuttings, any theories or input behind that?

An example, as I said, would be cuttings I have imported from California/Arizona several times whom were free of and remained free of any blemishes like this.

:mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2: For you for teaching me something about cacti I didnt know
