Boletacaea ID request, along with one other....
    #11117000 - 09/24/09 01:12 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Found a few of these fellas today in a ditch near a cemetary. I wasn't able to tell which trees were nearby except for pine and douglas fir, but there were others. I am going to go back with my tree guides later for more info.

Habitat: Soily, mossy grass in a ditch.

Gills: Yellow pores, quickly bruising blue.

Stem: Fairly thin, 1 1/2 cm. Streaked with red.

Cap: Brown, with many fissures.

Spore print color: Faint, but appears oliveish

Bruising: readily bruising blue on gills.

Location: North Seattle, Washington, USA

Here is another genus found in a swampy park, in the longer grass near the wet wooded edge.

Habitat: longer wet grass, near swampland.

Gills: Creamy off-white color.

Stem: White, fairly firm.

Cap: Light brown, veil remnants dangling off of margin.

Spore print color: Dark purple brown.

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: North Seattle, WA, USA

Thanks for the help!

1) Xerocomus chrysenteron

Thank you mucho Mr. Rockefeller! Both seem pretty correct.

Is the flesh in my pic red enough to be Xerocomos chrysenteron? I just read on Mushroom Expert that this feature is the best way to differentiate between that species and other fissured bolettes. I'm sure that you are correct, I just wanted to mention it.

Thanks again!

Good to know about # 1.  I've found quite a few of these (or very similar looking species)  this week, but none of them in edible condition.

Nice find. That stock isnt centered is it? So is a bolete generally anything that has pores? I mean, i know there is a specific boletus genus, a long with suillus, leccinum, tylopilus ect. But i still see some of those genera being called a bolete.

The stalk is central, or at least very close to it.

A Bolete can be anything in the Family Boletacaea, including all of the above genera.

Polypores don't count.
