    #1111114 - 12/04/02 08:58 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

has anyone else had problems with fish tank heaters? the last TWO i've bought, both of which were supposedly fully submersible, broke in the first day of use. am i doing something completely stupid?

i set them sideways on the bottom of my tanks, like this

They must be fully submersible, some say submersible, but they aren't FULLY submersible.

They also must be fully submersed. If you are having a lot of problems with them (like going through 5) then you are doing something wrong.

whoa! i'm a moron! i thought i had this shroomery posting down, and didn't need to preview...guess iw as wrong!

anyways, i have two rubbermade bins, one in the other, with water in it. i lay the heaters on teh bottom, sideways, which is undereneath one tub.

i think my problem may be that even though i use hot water to start it up, maybe i set the thing on high, and it heated up to fast as a result....

oh, and yes, i'll HEARTILY agree that they get MOFOIN hot if you leave them outta water...burned my hand so @#$#@$ bad on the first one when i plugged it in out of water to see what would happen. won't do that again!

thanks a lot guys, i think we solved it!

my reccomendation woul dhave to be a proquatics hydrosafe aquarium heater

i use a 50 watt

works perfect and automatically shuts off if water becomes to low and if there is a threat of overheating

will cost you a bit more than the cheapies....21.95, but totally worth it

and it is fully submersible, no problems at all with it as of yet

maybe use the method of having a glass juice jar, IN the tub, filled with water, and the heater in that? little bit easier to keep an eye on things. e.i water level's....just a thought might not work for your situation...
