that treatment isn't the same, and you're screwwed if you lack amazing insurance and make bank.

and what does this have to do with Obama?

you see, I don't really keep up with politics, mostly because they become as muddled as this thread. If you want to convince me to have a political stance, what little voting powers i may have included, you will have to let me know exactly what side you are arguing for.

I'm not an idiot I just can't stay focused on these sorts of things when the arguments and issues are so unclear. You can think I am an idiot for that, but there are over a million others even further out of the loop, and maybe a little clarification and coherency from those that are IN the loop could help to change that.

Otherwise, I have no idea whether you are for or against Obama or what. (I entered the thread a bit late too)

I was just talking about the sniffles...I don't know if they can turn you away or not, but I'd opt for the free ER if it was only the sniffles

bbl337, I have seen old ladies holding rags to their forehead while having to fill out paperwork. how does that make sense?

I saw a man with a gunshot wound sitting with the cop that shot him in
an ER for 6 hours, because it wasnt arterial bleeding he didnt get
pushed passed the guy with his leg nearly severed or the other 6 with
gunshot wounds to the chest, the guy with the cop was there first, how
is that fair

it was publicly funded hospital

Quote:
but the situation i described above is ludicrous. also i have heard of people loosing use of their fingers because they could have gotten in 15 minutes earlier but had to fill out mind numbing paperwork.

my mom had a finger severed and another crushed, she was pushed in
pretty fast, they filled out the paperwork for her while she was getting
the vitals checked and even back to the exam room, they take the
patients in by the severity of the trauma, if they're tied up with a
dozen hypochondriacs and a 10yo that needs stitches they guy with the
brain injury may die while waiting

Quote:
GW bush was quoted as saying "just go to the emergency room" okay, great, i got the sniffles so im going to bog down an emergency room full of gunshot victims and people who chopped off half their hand on a tablesaw

it happens way too frequently, my ex wife is notorious for ER visits,
she's been 2 times this week for acute hypochondria, something awlays
hurts so she has to go to the ER for it and on the ride there there
never seems to be the slightest bit of discomfort... I wonder why the
doctors stopped giving her prescriptions for pain meds after about the
10th time she pulled that

I don't get it.  Don't they keep sending you bills and shit and isn't it affecting your credit rating?  That's what they did to me.  I actually still owe some money.

ha...credit rating

that shit is long gone. Thousands of dollars worth of vet bills, then the payments got up to like $500 a month and I just couldn't keep up. Honestly I'm not too worried about it, I have my own bitchin' property that is in several names so they can't repossess it for any one person's failures, we just have to keep the taxes paid. My income tax refund can be taken away at will, but I'm a musician, I really don't care.

Wrong.  If you can't pay and it's not deemed a real emergency they can check your vitals and tell you to piss off.

You like to say things without checking your facts don't you?  The doctors the first time he was there that day said he was going to need amputations in the very near future.  I didn't make that call, THEY did.

then they've done their job, they've treated the patient and determined
that no medical emergency exists, can you tell us what qualifies as a
medical emergency? can you tell us why someone with no medical emergency
is doing in the ER with a hang nail

in the near future, that's not a medical emergency, they're obligated to
transfer him to another source of care, they dont normally amputate in
the ER anyway unless it's life threatening, the transfer it to another
doctor for the surgical procedure, that can sometimes take a few days,
was he supposed to hang around for a week in the ER

it's pretty clear

Quote:
The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (42 U.S.C. ยง 1395dd, EMTALA) is a United States Act of Congress passed in 1986 as part of the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. It requires hospitals and ambulance services to provide care to anyone needing emergency healthcare treatment regardless of citizenship, legal status or ability to pay. There are no reimbursement provisions. As a result of the act, patients needing emergency treatment can be discharged only under their own informed consent or when their condition requires transfer to a hospital better equipped to administer the treatment.

Mandated care

EMTALA was passed to combat the practice of "patient dumping", i.e., refusal to treat people because of inability to pay or insufficient insurance, or transferring or discharging emergency patients on the basis of high anticipated diagnosis and treatment costs. The law applies when an individual with a medical emergency "comes to the emergency department," regardless of whether the condition is visible to others, or is simply stated by the patient with no external evidence.

You can think what you want, that guy needed to be amputated asap.  They told him they were going to amputate that day until they went over insurance.  I've seen it first hand repeatedly, and if your experience is watching triage thinking that's the same thing; you're wrong.

Just curious, what's your medical experience?
