Diagnose and assess in this order:

1. Thermostat
It's most likely gotten old and is sticking closed so that it won't open up when the engine water heats to the right temperature.  If this is the issue, you should have noticed the problem within 10mins of your engine heating up to operating temperature.  However they can just suddenly stick randomly.

2. Blockage in your radiator.
Sometimes your radiator can have a blockage in it (which is unlikely considering you've just had it flushed) and this can cause a pressure buildup, not enough water to circulate and it heats up, also can cause a geyser of hot water when you open the cap.  You can buy products for $5 - $10 that you pour inside the radiator cap and let the car run for a while, you can also buy these for sealing your radiator although this does not sound like what you have.

3. Headgasket
Oil in the water - water in the oil.  Check your oil cap (where you pour the oil into the engine) and see if there is any milky/white oily crap around the inside of the cap.  This is indicative of water in your engines oil galleries which is not good.

Pray for the thermostat, I've had this issue a lot before in a lot of different cars and it's always been one of these problems.  There is also a tool which most mechanics should have called a "Teekay Tester" - this will tell you in around 2 - 5 mins if your headgasket is fucked.  If he doesn't have one, buy one from an auto store.  They should only cost $30 or so in America and are invaluable if you're ever buying a car privately and want to make sure the headgasket isn't fucked.

Hope this helps!

I hope so too it's only thermostat. I have a good feeling it is, since the mechanics who serviced my car just three days ago recommended that i change the thermostat, but i didn't do it (out of ignorance).

Just found three repair shops in my radius and I'm gonna call em tomorrow morning and get the best quote. If the mechanic i left the car at tonight can't give me the better deal i'm bringing my car to next best guy. Just don't trust him after seeing him open my hot coolant cap with bare hands. :shake:

Thanks so much for the input. Shroomery is there for you, even in car jams. Better than AAA.

I'm raged though that the auto shop that flushed my radiator did not diagnose this problem before I started my trip. They said I was good to go.

in their defense, it's not something that can be diagnosed via a radiator
flush, in fact flushing it may have broken loose something that was
plugging the hole, a few questions

was there any other service performed by that shop
how far had you driven before the engine started overheating

[The head gasket is not a part of the cooling system.
It sits on the top of your engine, and if there is a crack in it you could loose oil and water.

that's wrong, it's the gasket between the mating surfaces of the block
and  heads, it's a part of the cooling system just as the head and the
block are. if you blow a head gasket you can leak coolant into the oil
causing the oil to look milky, it can also blow fuel/air/exhaust into
the coolant, easy detection is if your coolant smells like gas, the
bubbles while not a guarantee of a blown head gasket can also act as an
indicator, coolant can also leak into the cylinders or the hold could be
between cylinders having no effect on the oil or the coolant

just an oil change. if it's in fact the thermostat i don't blame the shop. they recommended that i change it since it is old.

i started from florida and the car started overheating once i hit south carolina. after ca. 300 miles. made a couple stops at gas stations along the way.

based on this, it's probably not a bad thermostat but something may be
wedged in it restricting the flow, flushing the cooling system can be a
tedious process because of the crud that often gets broken loose and
clogs stuff up, thermostat and radiator are both subject to catching
many of the particles, honestly, it doesnt sound like they did a very
thorough job, at least not to the degree that I would have

$100 fee for changing one is pretty steep but that depends on the car
what make and model car are you driving

Generally a flush cost around 30-45 bucks.

generally changing a thermostat runs $40-$60, it's what I was referring to as a high price

Changing a thermostat for 60 w/ the actual part is not a bad deal, but we all know that won't happen.

on an older small block chevy that's a high price, same with many of the
imports, then again as was mentioned, some are difficult to get to so that
$60 could be a good deal and the $100 may not be too outrageous

2001 Dodge Neon. The mechanics who flushed my cooling system said there was a lot of sludge in it and they assured me they flushed it more intensively with clean water. I really just hope the thermostat needs to be replaced. I really would have a hard time affording a heavier fix. I just don't want the guy I left my car with to call me tomorrow and telling me about all these problems my car has. I'm not gonna get ripped off by some guy who knows I'm stranded without a car to drive back home.

Re: Stranded [Re: AlteredAgain]

well my guess is that it's nothing serious, not even the thermostat,
when you stopped and let it cool off earlier it wasnt long enough for
everything to settle out that may still have been left behind and it's
restricting water flow, flushing can also sometimes open up a pinhole leak

dont let the mechanic do any work to the car, save that cash, check the
coolant level and replace the cap, make sure it's on tight, start the car
and drive about 10-15 miles to let it warm up and stop for breakfast, when
you come out from breakfast check the color and level of the coolant, if
it's not bright green or pink then there's still shit in the radiator,
stick your nose in there to see if you smell gasoline, if that odor is
present then it's a head gasket

check the oil level not to see how much oil is in it but for color, it
should be the golden brown color of fresh oil, if it's cloudy, gray or
milky, that would be a head gasket

if you have no indicators of that sort then it can be narrowed down a
great deal, one thing to look out for is possible coolant leaks, some
may not be easily detectable but when the car is hot it will have a sort
of sick sweet smell if coolant is escaping, if it's not pouring out,
your fix is easy and you're in the right place for the repair kit
already, walk back into the restaurant (or take it on your way out) and
get the pepper shaker, dump about half of the contents into the
radiator, that will seal any pinhole leaks, it sounds hokey but black
pepper has saved me many times

head out for your destination and keep a close eye on your temperature
gauge as well as the milage to determine how far you're getting before
over heating, hopefully it wont, if it's under 30 miles then you need to
stop and have someone check it, if you make it mush further than that
then you can get to your destination a little slower by stopping to let
it cool down for an hour or two every time it starts to run hot

oh... and if I recall correctly, the thermostar is located right under the
coolant filler spout, you should be able to look down in it and see the
thermostat, removal and replacement would be 3 bolts, simple hand tools
and well under $100 to do it yourself, just follow the big radiator hose
and you'll find it's location
