Stranded
    #11064797 -

Fuck, I'm stuck in the middle of South Carolina on my way up to Jersey. My thermostat was rising while on the highway so I pulled over and my engine is bubbling hot. As a measure I added some more antifreeze as I've just had my coolant system flushed before my departure. Took if back on the road and 10 miles later my car starts overheating again!

Bring it to the nearest mechanic and he tells me it could be a broken head gasket, or a crack in my radiator, but he won't be able to look at it until tomorrow. So I had to get a room for the night and here I am. Luck's not on my side today. :frown:

I'm raged though that the auto shop that flushed my radiator did not diagnose this problem before I started my trip. They said I was good to go. :mad2:

Anybody here experienced here can tell me what the repair might cost me. What number of problems could it be and what would the average repair cost be? I want to have an idea before the mechanic quotes me so I can make a reasonable decision.

Until then WiFi for the rest of the day for me.

Bad headgasket is going to cost you over 1000. The guy at the autoshop is going to try and fuck you over. I would get some radiator sealer from an auto store such as Napa or Advance Auto. That will fix the cause if it is a radiator problem.

Wish you the best of luck. Where in SC are you?

Hope you find some shroomerites in S. Carolina to visit you.  I'm in Nevada, other side of the US, otherwise I'd give you a tow.

If it is a cracked head gasket, then your radiator man wouldn't have noticed that.

Are you blowing out massive amounts of smoke from your exhaust?

Howcome? Sorry, I know little about cars and motors.

TrancedShroom: No, I'm not blowing any noticeable smoke from my exhaust. At least not from what I could notice, i didn't really take a look at my exhaust. Engine bubbles and is very hot. There's enough coolant. A mild whistling is coming from the silver cap.. the mechanic unscrewed it a hot water sprayed out from it, almost burned his damn hands. He said something about there being air bubbles.

That guy is a fucking moron for unscrewing a heated coolant cap. Don't trust him.

Man,
It's your thermostat.  $15 part that'll take you hardly any time to fix.  You'll need to empty the radiator of the fluid, but you can catch it and put it back in after you replace the thermostat.

That's the problem about 60% of the time when your antifreeze is bubbling back into the reservoir.

Mechanics are going to try to fuck you with all these 'problems' that there may be when it's really that simple of a fix.

If you can't do it, take it in and ask them to replace the thermostat.  At most that should cost, with labor, I'd say around $100.

tops 1.5 hours if they're not busy.

It shouldn't take longer than 30 minutes to fix a thermostat.

The head gasket is not a part of the cooling system.
It sits on the top of your engine, and if there is a crack in it you could loose oil and water.

It probably isn't your head gasket.
Like Tri High mentioned already it's probably just your thermostat.
air bubbles don't mean shit and he was a tard for
trying to take the radiator cap off while hot

I would take it to someone else and
tell them you think it is the thermostat

this guy sounds like he is going to fuck you

This sounds just like what I was thinking before I came here to check in here.

The mechanics where I flushed the radiator recommended that replace the thermostat but i declined because it was a $100 more and they didn't sound too urgent about it.

This actually makes a lot of sense. Unfortunatly my car is at his shop for the night and I'm at the motel. I'm gonna call him first thing in the morning and tell him to first check the thermostat before he touches anything else.

Yes he was a retard for opening the cap. He used his bare hands. I'm definitely wary of him and will not let him fix it if he charges me more than $100.

I guess. All the cars I had weren't. Depends on the position of the motor.

I had a '68 Dodge PU, long wheel base, slant 6, that was easy as fuck to work on
you could raise the hood and stand inside the frame and work on that motor
Gawd I loved that truck :redneck:

I can't do that with my '97 Chevy Cavalier :nonono:

You can replace the thermostat yourself and you'll learn an important skill.  Its very easy on most vehicles.  You can get the parts for about $20 at any auto parts store.  Ask for a thermostat, the high temp thermostat sealant and any tools you will need. You can get the book for your car from the library with step by step instructions.

If there's no fluid under it (area of radiator) then it's not a cracked radiator.
