I liked the article. I especially liked the saying at the end by Louis Armstrong. I have thought about using it many times since I started posting but I thought it was too ill-mannered.

Here's what I've done:

In 1988 I quit watching TV.

In 2000 I quit going to the movies because they started having commercials before the movie started.

I do not read newspapers unless it is political season. Then because of my job I have to read them.

I do not read magazines.

I use adaware on my computer so I do not get pop-ups.

I listen to the radio only once in a while and when an ad comes on the radio goes off until I think the ads are over. If I turn it on and they are still playing I turn it off and wait some more.

All junk mail goes in the trash unopened and unread.

I do not shop at malls or even go to them unless I need a book I can't get anywhere else.

I raise as much of my own food to eat as possible.

I buy as many things at thrift stores as I can.

I reuse as many things as possible such as turning bread wrappers into sandwich bags.

I can, freeze, and dry my homegrown organic produce.

I pick wild berries, fruits, and herbs.

I am prepared at any moment to walk completely away from civilization.

And I work as a political consultant to change the world one idea at a time!

Good article, Murex!

What exactly do you do Mr. Mushrooms?

I just gotta say... Murex and Mr. Mushrooms- you guys are two of my all time favorite shroomerites.   Two of the coolest, smartest cats 'round these parts if ya ask me.

I like the article, and I tend to analyze ads the way that the article suggests without even realizing it.  I'll make a comment during a commercial on tv when my parents are watching, something like "check it out!  Jerry Seinfeld is sellin credit cards!" or something to that effect... and I always get a weird look like if just spoken a horrible falsehood.  :smirk:

Still, I think that the article is a bit, well, extreme.  I totally agree with it all, but damn!  I'm not gonna go out of my way entirely to avoid ads and advertised products, I do have a life....

A lot of the time I'm really just trying to fufill a need.  For example, I'm hungry so i swing by taco bell...  Sure, huge advertising company- Britney Spears and Pepsi logos out the ass- but i'm hungry and don't wanna go home and cook.  I could go to some little podunk fast food place down the street (and believe me, there's a locally owned place around here that I just LOVE and I've watched it kinda grow from a little tiny shack to a cleaner, easier to find shack ) and avoid supplying a major corporation, but dammit I like taco bell.
If I can get a nice hot tasty meal without even leaving my car in less than 5 minutes for what I feel is a few reasonable dollars, why shouldn't I?

So yeah, I'm a consumer, everyone's gotta consume something, the difference is just where it comes from I suppose.  If you grow your own food, etc. to avoid the whoe "consumerism" rap (or to keep your cash out of CEO's pockets, I don't blame ya), then more power to ya.  I just really don't have the patience to harvest my own tomatoes, cilantro, beef (or soy I think it really is, don't wanna know), lettuce, and wheat just for a gordita when I can get one for less than 2 bucks in about 30 seconds.

Don't get me wrong, I do have my limits...  especially when it comes to clothing.  I cannot STAND the logo-feces splattered t-shirts and hats i see all over the mall.  Nike, the Gap, Tommy Hilfiger, and Calvin Klein are all off my list, among many others.  What gets me is the guys with Nike symbols on their cars or even tattoos.  Nike logo tattoos...  what in the hell were they thinking?  Jesus christ there has gotta be something wrong with the human fucking race.

And it never ceases to amaze me the weird places they think to put ads...  on buses, inside buses, calendars, matchbooks, atm screens before you stick your card in, bank statements, post-its, T-shirts, people standing by the side of the road holding signs, little stickers on fruit at the grocery store, big beer standups, little spinning things on those standups, on top of taxi's, pizza delivery cars, FedEx trucks, trucker cargo, bookmarks (take em, they're free!), oh yeah, the free samples at the store, free samples in the mail, free gift packs after college orientation, free trial periods, no money down and no intrest for six months.  Pens (prescritions especially, I thought that's what I paid my doctor for, to gimme shit that makes me better, I didn't even know I could make requests), mints, candy wrappers, that one channel in every major hotel that tells you what you can do there, ads before movies, on the popcorn bucket, the cup, the straw wrapper, the little trivia thing to entertain you before the ads before the actual movie starts (visit the lobby!)  **Gasping for breath**
And children will get their parents to buy anything with a picture of Pokemon on it... happy meals, shirts, pants, underwear, socks, cards, shoes, toys, plates, hats, carpet, blankets, pillowcases, sheets, toothbrushes...  I don't think I have to mention TV, newspapers and magazines, anything that was made to pass around general info in the first place has become advertisement heaven.  Don't get me started on internet ads, spam, and movie product placement (what a horrible way to ruin what could be an amazing piece of art, it's like having the Mona Lisa with a TGIFriday's bib on and babyback rib sauce all over her face).

Well, now that I think I've fully established myself a a full-on hypocrite, I thik I'll finally put this post to rest.

They, the corporations and the people who follow, will never leave. They will never change. When change comes upon them they will be so scared that they will become violent and more ignorant then they already are.

I will create change.

You eat Taco Bell? Ewww. That stuff makes me shit in my phants before I get to the jon.  McDonalds isn't much better, but it's just gross fatty food.

Yeah, there are a lot of ads out there- and good thing I can't remember every one of them (but maybe subcontiously?). Bill Hicks has a great view on celebrities who do commertials.....something like they are off the artistic role-call and that they are being fucked up the ass by satan. That's a funny way to see it.

Yeah dude, you are the shit.  And yeah, I do eat taco bell.  Like Bill Hicks says about eating at a house of pancakes, "I'm not proud of it, but I was hungry..."

Thanks Llamanose, I know you are sincere in your praise.

Don't feel bad about eating at Taco Smell.  I even use it at times.  With all that I do I sometimes have to use fast food as a resource in order to do the other things I do like lobby.

Great post!

Murex, I suppose you are asking what exactly I do to make money.

I lobby, raise money for candidates, do statistical analysis for campaigns, design ads!, run campaigns, find candidates to run for various offices, and support the good ones!

Skittlebrow, don't sweat it.  Even if you just change one portion of yoru behavior you have changed the world in a small way.  If everyone did that the world would change over night.

Cheers guys,

In 2000 I quit going to the movies because they started having commercials before the movie started.

Oh my God, I hate this too. The first time I saw a commercial before a movie(in the theater), I was appalled. I paid 8$ to watch commercials?? And not just one or two commercials, but 15 minutes worth. I swear I almost walked out.

Thumbz up to Mr. Mushrooms. I personally could not ever bring myself to be in polatics because of all the ass kissing and greed. But I'm glad you're in there doing what you can.

Oh, yeah those commertials at the beginning of movies is frikn' retarded. That reminds me of Minority Report and how ads were everywhere imaginable. That holographic cereal box was halarious. That's so gonna be how it's gonna be.

That's what's cool about dvd's. there isn't 30 minutes of commercials before the flick. But it probably won't be too long before there are commercials on dvd's too
