British Columbia Find ID request.

Habitat: Wood - Found near a creek at the base of a hardwood tree.

Gills: Brown. The gills are free.

Stem: Whitish, grayish.  Seemed pretty firm.

Cap: Brown, smooth.

Spore print color: Printing currently.

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: Picked in British Columbia Canada.

I hope I did that right.

Psathyrella? Wait patiently for a TI though. At first I thought maybe an early Cyan but I doubt it.

Nah I don't think It's a Psathyrella, usually psathyrella sp are fragle he said the stem was firm. If it was any sort of psathyrella It'd most likely be Psathyrella candolleana.

Yeah it definitely doesnt look much like a Psathyrella, I think this one is probably something that isnt as oftenly mentioned as a name like Psathyrella.

Mushroomobserver.org is a good place to post mushrooms that are not commonly found, compared to these forums which get you quick ID's for just about any common Macrofungus.

You found a Hebeloma.  It is toxic.  Often these have a cinnamon or radish like odor.

Smells like a regular ol mushroom to me.

I didn't expect it to be edible or active, I just wanted to see what kind of stuff grows in my area.  Thank you Alan :laugh:

The print should be a medium shade of brown, similar to cinnamon.

Hmmm.

Looks just like the pics and description of Psathyrella hydrophila in Roger Phillips "Mushrooms of North America". I know, it's old.

and P. candolleana is described in that book as having a very fragile stem, where P. hydrophila isn't. And they look nothing alike.

I suppose it does seem a bit like a Hebeloma though.

Any word on the spore print? It has probably dropped enough spores to determine if they are brown or purplish brown.

Its not Psathyrella.

Both those species have fragile white stems.

Spore print is brown.

Light brown, but def brown.

Is it only the firm stem that makes it not Psathyrella? They look almost identical. Well that and now the spore print, of course.:grin:

Not just the stem, also the way the gills look.  Its subtle, but the underside of a Hebeloma looks a whole lot like Inocybe.  Also the cap is thicker and much more sturdy in Hebeloma compared to Psathyrella.
