British Columbia Mushroom ID
    #1525871 - 05/06/03 11:05 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I tried to make this as in depth as I possibly could because, simply enough, I DON'T WANT TO DIE!

Cap: Brown on the very top fading 1mm around into an orange and then another 4mm down it changes into a greyish white. The grey part has black indented lines running down it. At the tip the cap is about 1cm wide then it goes to about 2cm 3/4 of the way down and almost goes back to 1cm. The whole cap is about 4mm long. The indentations that run down it make the bottom of the cap sort of have "teeth". Some of the caps have opened up to be flat and about 5cm wide. The best way I could describe the mushroom is a thin bell.

Gills: More vertical than horizontal because of the cap shape. The gills have a spacing of about 1mm but they almost touch in the center. Closer to the top of the cap the gills are white but they change to a dark brown and even black in some spots.

Stem: Clear-white and hollow about 3 mm thick and 5cm long. There was no visible blueing.

Habitat: Vancouver, British Columbia. They grow by stumps in grass, there's also a lot of dead grass in the area. A completely white mushroom grew out of the stump as well as a brown trumpet-shaped one. It's May 6 right now and temps lately have been around 15 celsius..

Sporeprint: the print was jet black.

At first listen, they sound like Coprinus micaceus, a common lawn mushroom on wood in spring.

If you look closely at the top of a young cap (one with white gills), are there tiny mica-like particles on the surface? If so, then that's what they are.

Let us know if that's it.

Happy mushrooming!
