Identification Request
    #11012550 -

I'm requesting an ID for a mushroom I found growing in wood chips. It has a light brown, somewhat shiny cap about 2.25 in in diameter. Underneath is dark purple, and the spore print was also purple. The stalk is 3.75 in in length and about a third of an inch in diameter, and has a slightly shiny, brownish off-white color. Also, it was growing in a group with two others of the same kind. The smell is an earthy smell, similar to that of mushrooms you would buy in a store, with slight tones of a dung-like scent. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Out of my league, but it doesn't look like any active species that I know of (if that's what you're interested in.)

Was it a bit dry when you found it?  Quite a few mushrooms kinda get that metallic look to the cap when they start to dry out.

Stropharia species.

Yes, it was pretty dry, and yes, that is pretty much what I'm asking about. I get a lot of these growing in woodchips around my house, and since the spore print was purple I figured I'd give it a shot. :smirk:

to German Kahuna: Are they active?

If you're really interested in finding active mushrooms, doing a bit of research as to what types grow in your area as well as when and where will make it less like winning the lottery and more like passing a test

A really fun test.

yeah I agree on stropharia, it might even be Stropharia ruguso-annulata being as they are common on woodchips

It looks like Stropharia rugoso-annulata, but he said the cap was brown, that's why I wasn't sure. I thought the image color might be off. Certainly has a wine cap look to it.
