Howdy all, Starting for the very first time.

What's up people?
Going to be starting my very first grow soon (getting everything this weekend). I've been looking around this and another forum getting as much information I can.
I've read that the PF Tek is the easiest to do for beginners. But I plan on using Rye/WBS. Has anyone ever went straight to Rye and not Cakes?
I plan on using 1 pint jars to start off, doing it Stealth using a tub, using Coir/Verm/Coffee(maybe worm casting) as substrate ((or do I use that for casing?) I'll look around to find out).
I think I have the basics of it and I'll be posting a log when I get started.
I'm basically just saying what's up and warning you guys/gals I maybe asking a few questions. There are a few posts that I was looking at for information, but none of the pictures worked so that kind of sucked and I wasn't sure some of the stuff they were talking about.
Here's actually a quick question, do mushrooms smell/stink while growing them?

Substrate. CCV doesn't need casing. Worm poo is good, so is gypsum.

Yeah, starting with bulk projects is fine.  I did my first time; I've still never done cakes.  Don't let any newbs here tell you that there is anything wrong with starting with bulk sub cubensis projects, or using MS for a bulk project.  Cubensis are not particularly difficult to cultivate.  Best of luck with your projects! :thumbup: ~P~

Cool thank you much people.
I'm getting pretty excited about it. It's feels like the anxiousness I get before going on vacation.
I actually did look into the "let's grow mushrooms" videos, but I honestly can't afford that now. Getting what I'll need to get jsut to get started will be stretching our funds as is. Guess that's why I'm here.
I did watch a video on Google video; think it was "Growing made easy" or something like that; and it was pretty informative for someone that didn't/doesn't know squat about this.
Any recommendations on what strain a first timer should grow? Are the more hardy shrooms less potent? For some reason it'd just seem like it'd be that way.

From the little experince i have your gonna want to grow in a room with a temp around 75 my house is always 80-90 and shit goes slow

I tried searching with a few different key phases, but I couldn't find this out.
Is one method cheaper than the other?
Is using Rye cheaper than going with cakes?
Or is it more expensive since there seems to be more steps?

I would go with cakes then cheap for me atleast.

i just want to add
while your on your first grow
get an oyster syringe, do some experiments in bulk/grains/or what ever, then it will be alot more comfortable for you to master cubes
oh yeah and welcome to the shroomery take 5 :thumbup:

Yeah I was thinking of maybe just doing cakes, but doing it Rye(t) just seemed like it'd be a lot more fun.
I'm not sure though. My eyes seriously have been burning from reading so much. I've probably been reading these forums for acouple weeks now atleast 2-4 hours each day.
It's funny cause I feel like I should know how to do it, yet I still feel very unsure of doing it.
Decisions, Decisions.
Man this is just fun thinking about doing it.

Any opinions on the Maitres Pressure Cookers?
I looked and didn't find much at all on that brand.
And in my research (lol) I haven't really ever seen anyone mention
them. Mother-in-laws friend has one she said she'd sell us for $25
for a 12 qt. Seems like a good deal, but I've never heard about them.
Wasn't sure if one brand is safer than another, or if there are some brands to stay away from?

dont go worring your self about little things like the brands, Its a pc and as long as it holds pressure and has a gauge on it youll b fine.

And for 25 thats not bad offer 20 and she will take it

Well I got it for $34 and I was my Mother-in-law named Ebay, lol.
I'm hoping I got a decent deal, but I realize it could be hard to find
a gasket for a PC that I can hardly find information about.

Well I bought a 22gal (83L) tub, Some small Aluminum Basting pans, The 13QT PC, A Tupperware for GB, and (12) Pint WM Jars for now.
I have an old waterbed heater that I was thinking of putting under the tub and using that to heat up tub instead of fish tank heater.

I plan on using the tub for Flowering. Since it's stealth I'm looking into lighting options. I was also wondering how I'm going to keep the temp around 73F with High Humidity. I was thinking of adding pc fans to case, but figured that would let out the humidity. I would ask if putting ice in the water would be ok to cool down the inside, but that'd be alot of ice, alot of the time.
It's about 85F on top of our Armoire Closet where the tub is going.
I'm not even sure what the temp will be inside the Tub when I have the mushrooms in there starting to grow.

Well now it's time to try and find some Rye, Coir, and Verm.

wow 85, i bet your sub will be in the low 90's.  not good...  Got alot of bags of frozen veggies in your freezer?

then i run in cycles changing every 4 hours temp around 73

Hello,
Welcome to a very interesting hobby. I personally jumped straight to staw substrates. I tried cakes once and had no success. However in all fairness I did not build the elaborate closet for the cakes that I had for straw at the time. The straw method along with the purchase of a good pressure cooker and a great flow hood I built myself have resulted in a less than 1% contamination rate on my jars of rye.  I recomend purchasing a filter for ease of success, however it is not required. In my neck of the woods, pollen is at a pollutionary level. Along with a higher rate of contamination without filters.
