Re: Howdy all, Starting for the very first time. [Re: desertfungi]

Would having running water inside cool it down?
I was thinking of getting a little water pump and sectioning off
a little portion of box with plexiglass and making a waterfall in it.
I figured that way I could keep box totally enclosed and still possibly cool down the inside. I could keep the reservoir outside so that way I could add ice to it if needed or have it run through a small radiator with a fan.
Has this been tried? Does anyone know or have an idea how much that would/should cool it down? But then when it cools down the RH will lower then wouldn't it? So then I'd have to rig it up to turn on the heater.?
LOL...it seems like it should be easier than this. Or maybe I'm just over thinking all of this.

Yeah I'm from the midwest, so when I think of humidity, it's generally pretty hot. 70 just seems cool.
I have a 22Gal tub I'm using. Going to put a 11.75"L x 9.25"W x 2.5"D pan inside to use. Was going to have it raised off the water with PVC pipes.
Now I'm pretty sure I have this right, but I take the Coir/Verm/Coff. mix and place that in the roasting pan, then I'll take the Rye that's colonized and place a layer on top of that. I'm using pint jars so I'm figuring it'll take 3 jars to cover the sub. in that size of pan.
I was going test out the tub with just some sub. in it and see if I can stabilize the temp and RH.
Will be ordering some B+ when I receive my PC. Local store sells Rye berries, but they're $1.25/lb. Seems expensive from what I've seen others post, but it's local and I figure I shouldn't need any more than say 5lbs for only 3 jars. Actually I was thinking of at least doing 4 jars just in case.

Well I think I'm changing it up some now.
Going with WBS (for simple fact it's cheaper)
I bought a small bag of penningtons WBS. Looked
like the small bag would be enough for the amount of jars I have.
Might just do a 10gal tub (maybe TiT), but honestly wasn't sure how many pint jars it would take to cover the sub.
If I did do the whole tub I didn't think it would take
more than 12 pint jars, but not sure what I would do with
extra jars if I had some left over.
Anyways, like I said I'm thinking of doing a 10gal tub with WBS
and Coir/Verm/Coffee sub. Cut most of center of lid,
cover in painters plastic and just keep closed.
I'll fan a few times a day and too bad carbon dioxide detectors
are so expensive. I have a few thermometers with hygrometers in
them laying around, so I'll throw those in there.
Called around here and couldn't find any Coir so looks like
I'll have to order some online and unfortunately pay S&H.
Going to check around for some vermiculite. Looked at Lowes and HD
website and both said stores didn't carry it. So I'll try some local
garden stores.
I know most of you don't care, but still have to talk about it
and tell someone as I'm not letting anyone know except my wife.
Hopefully PC gets here sooner than later.

Nope, didn't try Petco, I tired a PetSmart by us, but they didn't have any. I'll check out Petco though. Thanks
And really I've just updated to get my 10 posts in, because there's a few links I can't check out because I didn't have enough posts, still have to wait a few more days though.

Received my 13qt PC yesterday. Went out and got 3/bricks Coir (Petco, thanks HaRo) also went to Lowes and HD to look for vermiculite, but couldn't find it. Called around to a couple garden centers and found an 8qt bag for $6.
Ordered some (Tyvek) Postal Envelopes, but haven't received them. Might just stop by P.O. Mon. and pick a few up.
I think I'll have to go buy a new strainer/colander, the one we have has pretty good sized holes in it, definitely too big for WBS.

Holy Crap HaRo I just noticed you only joined a week and half before me and already have almost 600 posts?! Wow that's quite a bit for a such a short time.

Well I started soaking my WBS (penningtons(sp?)) today.
Couple questions though.
I noticed when I was flushing/rinsing the WBS there is what looked
like, small rocks/pebbles. Is that normal? Does WBS really contain rocks?
They were very small, but I swear they were rocks and they came out of the bag.
Also I have the WBS in a pan soaking and there are patches of tiny bubbles. Is that normal also?
I know there are floaters, but I've heard mixed reviews on those so I wasn't too worried about those. I did however make sure I got all the black Sunflower seeds out.

well you positive there rocks i dont think birds digest rocks so there shouldnt be not sure what your looking at tho

bubble will stop when all the air is out of the seed
normal

when you boil/simmer
be sure to really watch them
i walked away from my popcorn when it was simmering walk back like 2 minutes every one poped (when seeds pop its just the outer hard shell splits)

You also didnt need to take out the bird seed.

All of mine have been fine, and I was told it adds txture.

But the rocks dont worry about they wont hurt anything but good work.

Well I just received my Spores from Sporeworks.
Went with Golden Teacher, but they also sent me a syringe of Panaeolus cyanescens, a couple alcohol pads and a glass slide to view spores.

THAT'S FREAKING AWESOME!

Very happy and that just makes me that much more excited, but also gives me a hard Decision. Do I do the GT or the PC? I was greedy and have a print of Oak-Ridge on the way. So I have a few options for my 1st time, or what I like to call back-ups just in case.

So Big THANK YOU Sporeworks and a Big THANK YOU to The Shroomy 1.
Can't wait to Jar up my WBS tomorrow and PC it.

The first couple times I tried WBS I had a lot of trouble getting the water content right, now I use a little vermiculite to soak up any extra water, works great. Plus I also use about a knife-tips worth of gypsum in each of my jars, for the first time though I wouldn't worry about anything but getting your water content right, not too much not too little. Just add a little verm and then pick the WBS up and see if it sticks to your hand, if just a couple pieces of verm stick, you're good, if you get pieces of WBS sticking to your hand, add more verm. There's actually whole threads about that so maybe go and look it up. Good luck though and keep us all updated on your grow. :mushroom2:
