If you are hunting at night then get it, mostly because it makes it ten times easier. And it helps you avoid stepping in shit.

I see that all the time at Mt. Shasta.  They can never pick all the mushrooms, only the ones in the most obvious locations.

These laws may suck, but they actually protect individuals' access to these common resources and level the playing field against larger more powerful entities such as commercial pickers/fishers/loggers/etc.

And requiring individuals to buy a license changes exactly what? Apart from putting more money in the government's pockets which is wasted on countless other things (like "defending" each of our countries' "freedom" in the shithole that is Afghanistan, for example), but certainly not for protecting the resources that require a license to be exploited by the general public. The Tragedy of the Commons remains, licensed or not, it doesn't make a difference.

States, cities, counties, have budgets separate from the federal budget in the U.S.  Ideally we could all live in a world where resources are abundant and there for everyone to share, but that isn't the real world.  I think you are forgetting that with licenses comes regulations and quotas.  The license itself may do nothing, but capping how much of a resource someone can take is the goal.

Yes, I see that and I understand your point. All I am saying is that in reality it doesn't make much of a difference unless quotas are enforced somehow (go back and see my 'couple of suitcases to a basketful' comparison). That's the only way it's going to work. States, cities and counties are always notoriously short on money and the last thing they are going to do is to spend the money they make from issuing licenses on actually enforcing these sort of quotas. It's something I've actually come to understand as a reality after almost four decades on this planet.

i've hunted mushrooms all over the northwest, and i'm familiar with the problem. i consider it to be an issue of respect or lack thereof.

i've seen habitat that had been comercially hunted for many years with great yeilds almost as a rule [or they would not hunt there] and i feel that most concerns over over-harvest to be a symptom of hunters finding a promising habitat temporarily piked over one too many times. i've seen it a lot in oregon. my trick: get there before most of the locals consider season to be underway, and find all you like. thriving, healthy populations as yet un-molested will give you a better idea of the availability of a resource than the mid-season low numbers that will occurr when dozens of people are scouring a particular area for weeks.
