licens or fungi?

i know the two are related and that this is most likely a lichen(sp?)
but its the nearest ive seen to fungi in weeks lol, but it is getting warmer here.


just wondered your thougths as ive never seem lichens flower if this is in fact what there doing hear?also am i right to belive lichens are fungus that contains live plant matter i.e algae?

I think they're lichens... although there are some weird furry stalked mushrooms that look similar to those.

I think those are lichens, too. Yes, lichens are typically about 95% fungus and about 5% algae. If the orange things are fruiting bodies then the fungus in this case is probably some sort of ascomycete.

Definitely cool looking.

Definately lichen. The common name is 'british soldiers', Cladonia cristatella .

What kind of substrate are they growing on?

Lichens consist of a mycobiont - the fungus, and a photobiont - either an algae or cyanobacterium.

But remember, algae photosynthesize but aren't plants.

The latest hypothesis is that it isn't a true symbiosis, but the fungi is holding the photobiont 'prisoner'

Cool thanks you lot i needed a refresher on licens :grin:

No-tone there growing in a sorta peat bog with heaths(heather)
on very acidic ground.But i did a search and im pretty sure you id'ed it ok :smile: cheers.

Eh... no-tone was faster. I knew it was Cladonia.

I also found these once and thought they were fungi.
