Thoughts on Pressure Cookers....new or old?
    #10925182 -

Just a quick question, seeing what your guys opinions are? I am looking to buy a PC off ebay, and i had this question? Should i look for a new or old one?
Talking with some older folk, they said old school pressure cookers are a lot better and longer lasting, than the new ones. Does anyone have any opinions on this? Also, i am looking for a "starter" PC, more to do LC than anything. What size would be the best? Is a 4 QT tall enough to PC a qt size jar??? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you

I say go with a really good AA. It will cost more up front, but will most likely last longer than a lil dinky one. Especially if it's a "starter" pc.... That means your most likely going to buy a larger on right? A couple cheap pc's isn't better than 1 real nice one. But lots if guys have no trouble with a lower quality pc.
If it does the job you want, then it's good enough.

The reason they say go with an old pressure cooker is because the good brands of yesteryear such as Mirro and Presto are now made in china with cheap materials and they're crap for quality.  I'd go with an AA 921. You can get one brand new for under $200, which is only twice the price of the made in china models, and the AA will be something you'll pass down to your grandchildren some day.  I guarantee the made in china models will be recycled into beer cans within a few years if you get one of those.  That makes the AA the best bargain out there.

My presto 23 qt. has been going strong for about a year and a half. Only thing I might get soon is a new rubber gasket for around the edge but that's it, it's been a great PC. I would certainly like to get an AA eventually but for now the Presto works fine, I really can't figure out where it would break, and why I couldn't replace what breaks. If the gauge breaks I get a new one, same with the gasket and the pressure plug. If it does break I will most certainly get an AA, mostly because if it breaks it will pretty much be like a bomb going off in my kitchen, I'm sure the AA will last forever, just a bit more money than I had at the time. A good PC is an invaluable piece of equipment when it comes to mycology.

If it works, it works.  As long as it's not a piece of crap, it'll work just fine.  A good AA will last you longer, but even if you bought a cheapo PC, it'd probably last you for a long time anyway.

For the record, Wal-Mart has a great return policy, if ya catch my drift..
