Wetter then they were before Damp-Rid chamber. (update: problem solved)
    #10916216 -

after fan drying as usual, they were put in a chamber with damp-rid.

they are usually left for 12 hours, opened cracker dry without being checked during the process.

the mushrooms this time were checked 2 hours into the damp-rid process and were WETTER then they were before they entered the chamber. The fan drying had dried them out for the most part, but now they are even more hydrated.

Is this a normal part of the damp-rid process? Is this just because the damp-rid is sucking the moisture to the surface of the mushroom tissue before absorbing it?

Or does it sound like something has gone wrong with the damp-rid chamber?

:thanx: in advance.

UPDATE: Okay, so apparently the source of my problem was not the damp-rid itself, but the moisture of the mushrooms going into the chamber. I'm used to the mushrooms being cracker dry within 12 hours of entering the chamber, sometimes even less. That's because I used to drying my mushrooms very high powered box fan on the mushrooms for 12 hours, however I usually split the mushrooms. So more than 12 hours of fan drying was necessary prior to entering the chamber.

Putting too many mushrooms in the chamber that were not fan dried enough resulted in a condition we call "damn-rid", which is when the shrooms become even soggier and bruise up inside the chamber. That was SURELY the problem, everything was air tight and the damp-rid was plentiful and viable.

Soooo, after 24 hours of fan-drying the un-split mushrooms I achieved the same results as usual, they were cracker dry within 7 hours of being in the damp-rid chamber. Nothing was wrong with my damp-rid chamber.

get a dehydrator. Trust me I've seen many experts agree here that the difference is nominal at best. It will make everything a lot easier. If you want more potent shrooms get into petri dishes.

You shroomery dehydrator pushers should all just go into the food dehydrator industry.

Seriously, I know a dehydrator is awesome, but so is the cost efficient method of fanning and then putting into damp-rid chamber. I'm actually maintenancing my damp-rid chamber by asking this question

only if you live in a low humidity area. I've noticed in a high humidity area it takes days to fan before dampridding.

They need to be off of the damprid either by using jar rings and a paper towel or a piece of window screen or any other means. also, damprid has a limited capicity to absorb and retain moisture. It is possible that you have reached the saturation point.
Other than that, I don't know.
Also they need to be in a sealed container but you probably already know that part.

Really? Maybe you have a shitty fan or maybe I have found the source of the problem. The fanning time was cut down significantly this time.

Is it possible that putting them into the damp-rid chamber too early after fanning is causing this problem? If so, shit maybe I'll go back to the fan for now.

oh sorry yea I forgot to use the drunk emoticon

putting to early into the chamber is the cause of damrid, the condition where you put not dehydrated enough fruits into the damprid chamber.

Rest assured I had a good fan. I use it to cool my house nowadays works much better for that.

okay, so the damp-rid is still good as long as it hasn't solidified?

dude that's exactly what I thought and exactly what i was hoping to hear.

hopes its the case.

two of the bigger ones came out of the damp-rid chamber looking like smurfs though, so i hope that doesn't happen to the smaller ones as swell.

of course the bigger ones had been split and what not.

ive used it a few times on some skinny, small, almost fully dehydrated batches.

its been in the chamber for about 20 days maybe. the damp rid is still all crispy and flaky, definitely not solid at all.

sounds like time for a change, but a dehydrator would be a good idea too, no noticeable loss in potency as far as I could tell.

I thought the damp-rid was ready to be change once it had solidified into a massive clump? The damp-rid still seems viable to me, and I doubt thats the problem, but I replaced the top layer anyways.

I woke up this morning and the mush in the chamber is STILL wet.

I would get a dehydrator but I just don't have the money for that. My girlfriends birthday is coming up and I don't even have money for a gift, what kind of dick would I be if I took the first 40 dollars I had and bought MYSELF a dehydrator.

Anyways, I don't know what to do. Im thinking about heat drying as a last resort (throwing them in the oven) but I'm still not sure.... crap!! somebody save me

Nobody I know has a food dehydrator

And I don't have the $$ for gas to get to a flea market right now, let a lone to buy the thing.

Yeah, so dehydrator is out of the question.

Honestly, I am reading a lot of oven drying threads and I am starting to think that may be the easiest way to go.

Here is what I have been doing lately, and it is working wonders.  It really does help with getting the last bit of moisture out before I throw them in with some damprid.

Does your oven get them cracker dry or do you just dry them out for a little bit and let the damp-rid do the rest of the work?

What temperature do you use? How long? Noticed any potency loss?

:thanx:
