damp rid problem
    #309576 - 05/04/01 07:14 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

ok, this kid i know harvested a few fresh shrooms and needs to dry them. he bought that damp rid stuff at home depot that has a small bucket with a suspended basket inside. the instructions say to dump the dessicant into the basket and set in a room with the lid off to remove moisture from the air. he thought this would work for drying his shrooms (only 5 small ones) by putting the dessicant in the bottom of the bucket and placing the shrooms in the basket above and putting the lid on. WELL, it's been about 3 days and the damn things are still wet, though looking pretty ugly and blueing. how long is it supposed to take to get these crispy dry? should he dump this method and go for something else? are these babies even good to eat now that they've been sitting in the bucket moist for 3 days? :\ help greatly appreciated. :)

It's best to let them air dry for a few days, then put them in a jar/ziplock with the damp rid to finish things out. If you put the shrooms in a paper bag in the fridge [on a shelf, not in the crisper], they will lose about half their weight in moisture every day. After 3 days put them in with the damp rid and they should be crispy within another 24-48 hrs.

Do you find that fan drying is unnessecary with this method? Could it work with mass shrooms, or is the paper bag limited to small yeilds?

well, if you let em air dry(fan) then place in a dessicant chamber you'll get great results, the mushies will discolor abit(tint of blue) but they will dry cracker style. Anyways if you opt for just the dessicant chamber you'll need either more damp rid or a smaller container, the greater size in cont. the more moisture per vol. of air the more dessicant needed to pull the h20 out of it.

ok, did you put the damp-rid in the bottom of the big container, or the bottom of the black container with holes. You need to put the damp-rid in the black container and put a screen over the tub. then place the shrooms on the screen and cover the whole thing. the water will drip into the bottom bucket.

moving air is essential to quick drying. add a small fan to your set-up.
