Pachanoi Monstrosity!
    #10869677 -

So I'm curious if these pachanoi are indeed monstrose?

Unfortunately I did not have the money to purchase these fine specimens.

I would offer the location that these are being sold, because I would prefer these to be in the hands of a responsible shroomerite, but I am concerned about breaking the forum rules.

Mentioning sources is against the rules man.
They look more like short spined monstrose Peruvianus, I have one of these. These are rare, I'd grab ASAP if I were in your place.

Alright. Thanks for clarifying that Felix.

I wasn't sure if the source rule applies to only online vendors, because of competition with sponsors.

They were being sold for $20 a plant Urb.

And sadly, I am no longer in the position to obtain these plants.

They're being sold at a shop Urb. Not an online vendor or anything.

$20....  That would have been a hard choice , but I would have gotten the one in the back.  I just got two cuttings of Short Spined Peruvianus . They don't have that appearance on the top of them.  Should I be expecting that when they root & get a little bigger.

If you are talking about the odd rib arrangement, that is a mutation that is referred to as monstrose.  As far as I'm aware, any species of cacti can become monstrose. It is just a mutation of the plant.

I've heard some say that the monstrose mutation is induced by stressing/damaging the aperical meristem, but I've also read that scientists have not been able to prove this theory in a lab setting.

The one in the back seems prettier but these ones alternate between regular and monstrose growth. At least mine does.

I have three cactus of the SAME EXACT KIND. Color and spine size and the knobbly top stuff on top of one of them. Yeah those definatly are short spined peruvian. But I bought mine labeled as San Pedro.

I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree with the short spine peruvianus ID.

It looks like many of the Peruvian Pachanois I have seen.

Granted most trichs are mutts, but that looks like many of the true pachs i've seen.

I agree.  The front one is very beautiful to me.  Minus the monstrose growth, I'd say the phenotype of the front one looks textbook pachanoi.

I think it's well agreed in the community that the V notches down the stem are not a pachanoid treat.

So is that why the backberg clone isn't considered a true pachanoi?

What ever happened to that really awesome thread explaining all the problems with trichocereus taxonomy (specifically peruvianus)? I can't seem to find it...

Here's a good page on the backberg/pachanoi debate

It also has some pictures of pachs from South America that have decently defined V notches IMO

I dunno I just notice a huge variance in V notches on many cacti, not just trichs, and I don't recall the original Britton Rose cataloging of Peruvianus mentioning them.

The main notching I see on those resembles the notching on the bottom left one in this picture or even Doc's plant

Trichs are usually mutts anyway though, so there is no use in us getting into huge arguments over them

I would argue that V-notches are not a trait necessary of any species.  I have seen plenty peruvianus completely lacking of notching.  I have seen many many bridgesii, pachanoi, peruvianus both having and lacking V-notches.  Saying that v-notches indicates peruvianus or any other species is trying to make a hard-and-fast rule where none exists.

A much more legitimate guideline in my opinion is that the number one indicator of peruvianus is a dominant spine.  Not that having a main dominant spine means a cactus is peruvianus (bridgesii often has a dominant spine and although uncommon pachanoi can display it), but that T. peruvianus exhibits a main dominant spine without fail.  The name 'short-spine peruvianus' was only made to differentiate between the common peruvianus and cuzcoensis plants that had been in cultivation for years and the newly-available-in-cultivation SA pachanoi which was erroneusly first available under the name 'peruvianus'.  This was in the 90's.  MS Smith is generally credited with being the person who added the short-spine to the name to make the distinction, he has long since dropped the prefix and regards the plants simply as T. pachanoi.

My point is that the cactus that still to this day is called 'short-spined peruvianus' does not have dominant spines!  Therefore in my opinion it simply cannot be considered peruvianus.

Good link regarding SSP.
