T. pachanoi and the Backberg clone
    #10477521 -

I need a more clearer understanding of just what is a Backberg clone and what the difference is between it and a 'true' Pachanoi. I have a basic understanding but I'd like to find other sources outside of what I have found just to be sure that understanding is correct.

Yeah I clearly see they are two different cacti, but I'm looking for information. Where do they grow? what are the growth patterns? speed? coloration? What's the difference in mescaline content, etc.

This I could not find anywhere. I'm pretty sure I have a real deal pachanoi that was sold to me as a "super peruvianus"(said to grow faster than bridgesii) and I also have what I know for a fact to be a Backberg clone. I just want to make sure I understand these two different cacti better.

Backberg

"Super Peruvianus" (True Pachanoi?)

Backberg was a cactus collector.

Backberg clones have the same genetics as the clone he collected, and introduced.

I think this yours 'Super Peruvianus' might be more of a Peruvianus than a Pachanoi, because of the proeminent V notches over the areoles. Maybe its a short spined peruvianus, it looks great.

Wrong!

Backberg did not collect what we're reffering to as the backberg clone. The backberg clone HAS NO representative in the wild, and doesnt quite fit the specs to be a true pachanoi (probably a manmade hybrid).

Its a huge misnomer, to call the plant in question the backberg clone, but what can you do? Its spread too far to change everyone's vocabulary now.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of people call it PC or predominant cultivar as Mr Backberg didn't collect this one. To me, however, it's sort of like asking to not call Echniopsis a Trich -- it just isn't happening :p

no one knows the origins of the backberg clone, apart from that backberg supposedly collected it in the wild.
however, the location has never been identified and the plant has never been observed in it's native habitat (if it has one)

lots of speculation, no definitive answers.

That seems to be a recurring theme with Trichs. :crankey:

Maybe it has been in human cultivation for thousands of years?

Again, there are almost no representatives of the clone outside of the continental US...

Thousands of years?  I think not.
