Heating Matt
    #10868964 -

Hi im sorry if this is a stupid question. I have just atempted cultivating some mazatapec mushrooms using the pf tek, They have been left for a few days. I have been trying to use a small heat matt (Heat matt was designed to heat up small areas of tanks for reptiles ect) and thermostat to keep the temprature arround 80 degrees. To avoid the heatter being to intense it is on the other side of a small tank on the side so it just warms up the ambient temp by a degree or so if needed. Because of the weather the temp has been changing between about 78 and 84. Any advice will the heater cause damage?
Cheers

dith the heat mat

you dont need to keep your jars colinise at a steady temp, nor does it hvae to be at the utmost highest you can use.

room temp is fine, and i have seen no difference above that.

The higher the temp the more likely you will have contams creep in and sour your jars. What I have seen is, at a lower temp it takes the mycelium a little longer to grow but it is worth it. Losing to contams sucks ass.

Good luck.

In my experience Matt tends to get angry when I heat him.

i glad this was brought up cause iv thought about heating units methods.  warm incubation in any form for the jars is frowned upon, good to know this now.  can should heating pads etc be used for the pinning fruiting process?  would it help?

I don't heat for any step and I've had plenty large flushes even in the 62*-70*F range.

No need for heat in my opinion/experience.

In all seriousness it really depends on who you ask... Around the forums people tend to frown upon using incubators for most if not all steps in growing.  If you hang around chat for a bit, many of the cultivators there will tell you they always incubate jars.

The problem with incubation is that most newbies including myself lack the knowledge and experience to find the "sweet spot" when incubating.  IMO this is the reason people say not to incubate, as too much heat WILL cook the mycellium/spores.

I've had some people tell me they can fully colonize jars of WBS in 10 days with the proper use of an incubator.  Personally the extra time spent waiting for colonization is alright so long as I'm not killing my jars from using too much heat.

In other words, room temperature will work just fine, tho it may take a bit longer.

There are MANY more problems with heating than finding a 'sweet spot'. Normally people just take my word for it when I post from experience, but here are a few more reasons why not to heat:

If you have your (any container of myc) enclosed, for example using a TiT incubator, you run the risk of stale air which promotes growth of mold. Most specifically cobweb.
When you warm a jar up to 80*F from say 70*F, you allow bacterium to grow about 500% faster, while only allowing the mycelium to grow a small amount faster, say 10%. Thus you are promoting contaminates more than you are the mycelium.

Now if you really screw up, you can definitely harm the mycelium with too much heat, dry it out with too much heat, or catch something on fire in your home.

Furthermore, I've had dozens of jars fully colonize in 10 days at 72*F. I've had this with both quart jars with rye grain and half pints of PF mixture. It's quite dependent on your moisture levels and proper inoculation technique, such as hitting all four sides of the jar with spores.

Ps, this is not meant to be condescending or me claiming to be an expert. It's just info I've learned from firsthand experience and reading the forums. :peace:

I remember the first few times I got the itch to try and speed things up, I set my jars outside in the sun, was about 95F that day, needless to say the fuckers got fried!!! end of story...
oh wait and the time I got drunk and passed out while PCing some jars woke up to the house smelling like burnt verm... guess what it was burnt verm

Many thanks guys. Iv removed the heating matt and thermostat so just got a thermometer to check the temp. What is the minimum temp they can be at before the colinisation stops? i figure while its around 70-75 it should be ok. Havnt seen any signs of growth yet but is still very early just gotta ressist the temptation to look evry time i go past.

Here's what I put together for an incubation chamber. It doesn't look great but it works at keeping the temp around the mid 80's.

The heating source is a lamp with a 5 watt bulb inside the larger box on the bottom. I cut a huge slit on the large box to let the heat escape through the top. you place your PF jars inside the small box and place that on top of the large box. Stick everything in a small closet and your jars are colonized in 15 days. It's very gentle heat so you should be ok. The trick is to use a low wattage bulb like 5-10 watts, or use a thermostat.

cool i got 77 room temp at the mo so im just gonna leave it for now. but that does look like a nice cheap way of heating. 5 watt bulbs didnt no they even existed. ill have to look for one when the temp gets lower. or culd try and use a 40w bulb and the thermostat unless you think that will be to agressive.

Try looking for 15 watt bulbs. Those should be easier to find. Just adjust the opening on top of the large box to vent more or less heat. If you want more heat, close the gap, less heat, open the gap. Also the reason for a 5-15 watt bulb, is less energy consumption. But if you have a thermostat, you can probably use any wattage.
