how do you, yourself prepare trays

Right now i am trying to get some feedback on making trays. I know when i had success was only when i did one tray at a time, when i ran out i would make another tray.

    Well, i just want to make enough to last me quite a while. It seems easier to make it all at once then doing little batches from starting from scratch...

    When i did my individual trays i used incubation and had success... Right now i have 3 trays using rye and jiffy mix. I had the rye 100% colonized and cased with jiffy mix in aluminum trays. I let it sit at room temp between 75-78 degrees. After a week i see a little mycelium poking through but when i pulled the side of the tray to see the rye itself it was not colonized looked just the way i had it when i took the rye out of the jars and crumbled it up. the mycelium that poked through was at the very top. So i rewrapped the trays with cling wrap.

    I uped the temps to 83-85 degrees and will wait for a few days.

    I am wondering is it better to make a incubator instead of leaving the trays at room temp? also, would like to know will my current trays colonize fully because with it sitting at room temp i am afraid of contams...

    I plan to use a big rubber maid tote with a fish tank heater to keep the temps at 82 degrees for a week and they should be good cause that is what i did in the oast but just with one tray instead of 3.

    I just want to know if my current trays will make it or will they contam?

You don't really need to incubate trays, they make their own heat. Just keep them someplace enclosed and they will do fine at room temp.

i am not exact sure what jiffy mix is, so i cant really help you.  whatever it is, if you had it properly hydrated and there isn't a contam, you should begin seeing significant colonization after three days, as long as this jiffy mix is suitable for the mushrooms you're growing.  do you have holes for gas exchange?  i think incubating doesn't really help enough to justify how many problems it can cause, i dont know of anybody who knows what they are talking about who would recommend incubating your trays. 

this is what i do:

get a 7" plastic bin, mix substrate materials up, hydrate properly, and pasteurize for 2 hours. put a plastic garbage bag in the tray and pour the substrate on top.  pour out my colonized grain and mix it up with the substrate.  put plastic wrap over it, poke some small holes in the wrap, and leave it in the dark till colonized fully.  case, wait two or three days, fruit.

When we talk about Jiffy Mix, it's a brand of potting soil for seedling that contains peat and verm, with a pinch of lime to balance pH.

When I first came to these boards I read about using Jiffy Mix, so I ran out and bought about 8 boxes of jiffy mix cornbread mix. Haha.
So yeah, it's a potting soil mix.

Yeah, it was funny and made an interesting experiment but not so good as a casing layer. Better with butter. haha

Please know that I by no means, mean any offense by this. I am just curious as to why you have over 1,000 posts and you are inquiring about cased grains? Where did all those posts go if you were not handing out advice?

That explains it. I guess I have always been much more of a reader than a poster (search button works wonders). I have been doing some posting recently though, trying to help some struggling newbies to avoid the pitfalls I made. I wish others would refrain from answering questions they know nothing about, it can really throw a newbie off. Thank goodness for TC tags these days.
