boiling sterilization question
    #1085352 - 11/25/02 07:11 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Using new 1/2 pint jars, the holes are not in the lids

should holes be punctured before boiling, then cover with waterproof tape?

or puncture the lids once they are cool and ready for innoculation?

one more question....when placing jars into pot to be boiled, do they need to have a tin foil barrier on the over the lid?

thanx

Puncture the holes before boiling. I place aluminum foil on top of my lids during sterilization.

cheifdog is right. Puncure the holes and then cover with foil.

Remember to keep the water at a very, very low boil. If you don't you may get water in the jars. Happened to me several times. :frown:

Shouldn't be a problem if you wrapped it very good with tin foil. But you might as well put it on a low boil becasue a boil is 100 degrees low boil or not.

left jars in enclosed boiling pot for 50- to 60 minutes...then left covered until lid was warm to the touch...then placed in incubator 80-87 to chill overnight before innoculation

question...was the time in the sterlizing environment long enough?

i am seeing teks/posts that say at least 60 minutes

should they be put back in the pot for another 30 mins?

another question:
i am noticing some teks dont call for the inch of dry vermiculite when preparing the 1/2 pint substrate jars....this does help correct

thanks for ur help!

I also noticed the pot i used was a steamer pot....the steam was being released somewhat but i would reclose the valve every 15 mins to let the steam build up...

so were the jars sterlized properly?

BEFORE!!! I've done this to myself twice now. What happens when you poke holes after they've been boiled, it sucks in air to a recently sterilized substrate totally defeating the purpose of what you just did sterilizing it : P

Hey guys I'm bumping this because I had a quick question and there's no need to start a whole extra thread about it and take up more space. So if someone could answer this real quick that'd be great.

My question is similar to his --

Steam is escaping through this hole at the top in my boiler. Should I be trying to keep all the steam inside? Or is it okay for steam to be released as long as it's at a constant boil not touching the jars? Also I covered the holes with masking tape then covered the jars with tin foil. Is this how it's supposed to be done?

Thanks.

Dont try to keep the steam in you could blow up your steamer there is a reason its a steamer and not a PRESSURE cooker.

plug the hole in the lid, it will allow the pot to boil dry very quickly wlel it does in my pot. I use bluetack believe it or not to plug the hole.

You want to keep the steam in.

Also you should be timing 90 minutes from whenb steam starts escaping the lid, i do 2 hours from when it starts boiling just to be sure. 60 minutes isnt going to be enough.

good luck trying to keep the steam in. even with making a better seal around the lid and pluging the steam vent, steam still escapes from around the lid just not as much.

thats what i have done to my pot and it doesnt explode, unless the lid was bolted down its going to led pressure out.

Watch all four of these brf tek videos and read the text.  The jars should be above the water, not in it.  Steam for 90 minutes, and don't start the timer until steam is escaping from the lid.  That will be about ten minutes after it starts boiling.  At that point reduce the stove setting to the minimum that will keep the water boiling.  Add small amounts of water during the cycle if necessary to prevent the pot boiling dry.  Watch those videos carefully.  They answer all your questions, including the ones you're going to have when you move to the next stage.

Oh really? Cause I just submerged all of the jars in boiling water.

lol j/k

Yeah I'm following the BRF tek videos really closely. I did exactly what they did with the stacking of the lid screw-on thingies then foil then more lid screw-on things. I guess that makes total sense that steam has to escape or else the thing will blow. Duh. Wasn't thinking about that. So obviously the escaping steam is natural.

Thanks for the overwhelmingly helpful responses guys. The cultivation section is super helpful. I've been mainly just searching the already made threads because there's already a ton of help within them and I bet the redundancy with threads in here is rampant.

Once again, thanks.

I just made a makeshift glovebox - suran wrap at the top lid to see in, two holes cut with a knife to put my hands through. I sprayed a ton of lysol and bleach cleaner in my tiny bathroom with a mask and goggles on. I'm gonna do the inoculation in there. The glovebox is just sitting in my bathroom right now. Any suggestions or tips before I proceed? Any input would be greatly appreciated even though I think I'm doing quite well so far.
