Everything in moderation..

I don't think it's wrong to play MMOs or MMORPGs or MMOFPSTBSRPG ("Massively Multiplayer Online First-Person Shooter Turn Based Strategy Role-Playing Game" is not a real genre... yet), but it's when it becomes their main or only source of joy and happiness, or when you spend the majority of your time playing it or thinking about the next time you'll play that you should consider maybe not going on this next Quest, at least for a little while.

the thing about MMO's is that they are very crack-like, and what goes on in that world takes importance over the real world. I can definitely see what you're saying, and that's why I don't play them. I do enjoy videogames, even online games, but MMO's are neverending, and extremely time-consuming, having you repeat mundane tasks for the sake of leveling your character or collecting the next item. I don't know how to explain, but it's like the whole sense of immersion is fraudulent (this is my complaint about Oblivion as well), because you can easily take any particular quest and replace it with anything, built around a "go here, do this, repeat" framework that is essentially endless and pointless. I put up with repetitive battles in Final Fantasy games (6 being my favorite) because there is something magical about the world that is created, there is an epic story that comes to an epic conclusion, and has themes that can really touch the heart if you let them. With MMO's it's just an endless sea of completely replaceable quests, environments, the mundane leveling, and like i said the worst part is that their artificial worlds start to take precedence over important things, and suck away countless hours. It's kinda like Pokemon with it's "gotta collect them all", except you can never collect them all, because they are constantly adding more. With MMO's (or other addictive online games) it seems a lot of people start to feel obligated to spend hours in that world, to maintain some sort of social or status thing they've got going on there, missing out on real life the whole time. IDK, not neccessarily the case, just my 2 cents

end rant

A guy in the documentary just said it better than I could've thought to:

"These videogame environments may actually be holding up a very critical eye to the society that we have out here. It might be saying something deeply and dramatically negative. [...] If we lose hundreds of millions of people to these synthetic environments, that'll be a terrible condemnation of the kind of world we've made out here."

That's exactly it. If this is what people are turning to, think what that means about what they're turning away from. This is what human lives have become? It's horrifying.

I think that effect can be seen in lots of society

Shroomism said:
It's not all that unhealthy. In major excess like some people do take it.. it can be detrimental.
But in moderation its fine..
MMOs tend to foster a sense of community and camaraderie that some people can't find elsewhere. Good friendships can and do form.
For a lot of people its more like a chatroom of friends with a video game attached.
I'll agree that it can be unhealthy if played to extremes
to the point where you start to neglect real life obligations.
But no one has anyone to blame for that but themselves.
A lot of people spend the same amount of time watching TV,
some may argue games are far more interactive and entertaining, and may 'feel' more rewarding.
That's why they are so addicting.
But for a lot of people it's just an escape into a land of fantasy and imagination, and there's nothing really inherently wrong with that.
Especially games that foster a sense of community.
People play video games because it is an enjoyable experience.
When a game ceases to be enjoyable and feels more like a second job is when you've taken it too far.
So again like all things in life... moderation is key.
People demonizing MMOs is the same thing as blaming drugs for people being fuckups..
it's not the drug's fault you take it all the time and do stupid things.
It's not the drug or the game, its the person.

MMOs are just a hobby, a source of entertainment, and a place to talk to people and adventure together all rolled into one.
Maybe that's why like 500 trillion people play them

Im a pretty big gamer but even lately ive cut way back, down to about 10 hrs a week or so lol. typing it out sounds like more than it feels like. But lately the only games ill even play have some sort of mental benefit or hand eye coord. I wish more games were aimed at using and developing your brain, they dont have to be like an eduactional game though.

I played 1 or 2 mmorpgs, but never for over a couple months. I got bored of em too easily.
My little brother became very addicted, never left the house, didnt even leave the computer to eat and even became suicidal though.

for anybody who actually hasn't seen the incredibly hilarious South Park episode "Make Love, Not Warcraft", (season 10 I believe) go to

www.southparkstudios.com (the legit site endorsed by the creators)

or www.allsp.com (in case you have any trouble with the other one, this site has every episode, but is not "legit")

Eh, I had an MMO phase.  I played EverQuest for some years and then WoW for a few months when it came out.  It was at the right time in my life, I was socially awkward and kids were cruel.

I feel like I turned out just fine.  I go out a lot and don't play nearly as much video games anymore, but I was pretty sucked in for awhile.

haha. MMOs are a part of human life; humans created them as an art/entertainment product just like movies or tv. Part of the human experience is experiencing others reality through art, and general communication. the problem lies in obsession or addiction, just as it does with drugs, tv, anything really... i hate tv more just because the way i see ppl get sucked into it like mindless zombies, at least games are somewhat interactive and sociable. (although sociable on the internet is a loose term lol)

Ya ive always gotten bored about halfway through, have never gotten to the max lvl in an mmo lol. even when i set a goal to do it just to have done it in one, got sick of the game/world.

Yeah, MMOs are a part of human life. So's gonorrhea. That doesn't mean they're a good part of human life.

If you watch the whole documentary it actually makes a pretty convincing argument for both sides, it's not biased.
Yeah some people turn into fucking MMO zombies because they have super addictive personalities, but if it wasn't for that it would probably be something else.
Just because some people are unable to exercise any sort of self-restraint doesn't make something bad.
I think one guy said it best. We are gamers, that's what we do.. some people watch sportscenter, some dick with their cars, some people play golf, some people watch movies.. whose to say anything people do to entertain yourself is a waste of time?
If someone chooses to spend ALL their time gaming and never go outside, well thats their problem.

The bias is very clearly mine, not the documentary's; and I'm not claiming MMOs are evil nor condemning them as entertainment ... it just frightens me to see people whose worlds are so small. I don't think the SportsCenter folk are any different, really.
I hate seeing people living in bubbles. Maybe I'm fuckin' crazy, maybe this is all in my head, but what can I say? It bothers me. I find it pretty scary that ... well, that a person can go from cradle to grave without ever wondering if there's more to life than just routine.

It's starting to sound like the real problem is in your head, not in these peoples lives. Being afraid of the way someone else is living is irrational, dude. You're going to have to get over that.

I'm not afraid like "oh no its gonna get meeeee"
I'm not afraid for myself -- I just think it's pretty scary that people can have the wool pulled over their eyes so completely. And I don't mean that in a paranoid "someone's out to get us way," I mean ... fuckin' ... man I really don't know how to explain this.

You don't see a problem in a life lived without wonder? Because that's what's happened to these people and others like them. Their lives have been reduced to utter predictability. That's just wrong, man. That's not how people should live.
And I suppose you could say "so? What the fuck are you so worried about? It ain't your problem." ... but that doesn't feel right. That would be just letting this keep happening.

I think that's what scares me, really: I have no idea what to do about it. I have no idea how to help these people. Cuz once that's the life they're living ... it's goddamn near impossible to convince anyone there's more to life than they thought.
The only solution is to catch 'em young and raise 'em right, which isn't something I can do anything about.

Re: Want to know what terrifies me? Apparently, MMOs. [Re: laserpig]

i think I have somewhat of a way to explain it

imagine getting REALLY stoned or tripping...and you and all your friends are sitting there watching law & order...now, law & order, or wheel of fortune, or whatever, is not what's freaking you out, but the passing of time, precious, sacred time, being wasted on sitting there watching something with absolutely no value, it just creates this feeling like suffocating, like your soul is screaming out to do something more, and the other people just dont feel anything like that at all, but you do, all too clearly

it's hard to explain, and that's not to say that anybody HERE who is playing these games are zombies...some people dont have a problem with it, and get some kind of enjoyment out of it, and that's just fine. Some people have imaginations that make it much more than just point, click, repeat. But I'm guessing most of you would get bored after a while if you were playing these games tripping. It just feels mundane to sit there pointing and clicking away for hours. But some people never even notice this mundanity, and that's where the horror lies. I'm at a loss for words here...It getting hard to not sound like I'm arrogantly putting down MMO's and the people who play them...but really it's not even about that, it's about life, and sometimes we get caught up in shit, mundane shit, whatever it may be, and dont live it to the fullest. Luckily most of the crowd here is people who WANT to live life, and try to do so, so there's absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying gaming, as long as it doesnt start to take control. It's one thing to engage your imagination, it's another to not. I'm kinda tired and out of it right now, so it's a little hard for me to clearly make the distinction, but there is one somewhere. I feel like I'm ranting, but I feel like I know where the OP is coming from, even though some games have a very special place in my heart. There are games and TV shows that can spark something special, and there are those that just lack any real depth whatsoever but keep people hooked like fiends

I bet in the far future, when you can hook up all of your senses directly to a computer, artificial realities
will be created where you have much more freedom(physically ex:flying, more strength, better vision). The real fun
will be when it goes MMO, I can see huge groups of people living most of their life in virtual realities. Maybe even
the possibility to use and gain real world money in the game, creating jobs so you can work to afford living necessities
in "reality". Then after some years we create robots that take care of all the necessities in real life. Eventually we
have a matrix style living cell and the virtual reality has become more detailed and full of human life than the earth.
Of course god would then exist and he would be the creator/programmer.

I'm not sure how much of the matrix story line I just stole, but it seems like a rather plausible outcome in the future
or past..

I agree with you to a point, but I guess I don't think there is a way life "should" be lived. It never seems to work to try to "help" people who don't want it (aka: rehab).

btw I completely understand what you're saying, but I just don't have any solutions, really. i'm not trying to take an apathetic stance, but does it really seem that bad to accept that people waste their time on earth? I can think of far more troubling human behaviors. That's all.
