Want to know what terrifies me? Apparently, MMOs.
    #10819637 -

So I decided to watch this documentary about MMO players on Hulu:
http://www.hulu.com/watch/87648/second-skin

I'm 10 minutes in and I realize that my jaw is tight, I'm clutching the arms of my chair, I feel a pit in my stomach ... and it hits me: I am terrified of what I'm seeing.

I don't really know why. Three times now I've typed out a paragraph trying to explain, then highlight-backspace'd it. It doesn't look like humanity. It's like how the Amish or whoever were afraid that cameras steal souls. It looks to me like this is stealing people's souls. That's an overdramatic way of stating it but ... does anyone see what I mean?

This isn't right, man. This is fucked up. This is not what human life is supposed to be, and yet the people caught in it have no such concern.
I don't mean just MMOs, that would be silly. It's the whole lifestyle, it's the way these people see themselves and others. It's ...
I dunno man. It's fucked up.

Anyone see what I'm saying here? I don't claim to have a point, really, but fuck it: figured I'd share.

I don't play any MMOs, but it seems like television has been dominating the market on giving away false lives for a while too.

Yeah, it's unhealthy.

It's pretty funny that you're scared of nerds, though.

they're fun in moderation as with many things but some people like to make it a full time job.  that's not fun imo.

I had friends get REALLY into them.
I mean wouldn't go to class, would not hang out (had to raid or whatever)
I remember seeing my friends WOW account had 6 months of play time
He only had the game for 1.25 years at that point.

I played WoW for a while now, if you can play in moderation it's all good.  I watched some of that documentary... they are taking it a bit too far.  I have to say tho, if I play my PS3 long enough I start to feel detached, at least in an MMO you have some nonsense chat to read while you kill 2,000 wolves :crazy2:

the thing about MMO's is that they are very crack-like, and what goes on in that world takes importance over the real world. I can definitely see what you're saying, and that's why I don't play them. I do enjoy videogames, even online games, but MMO's are neverending, and extremely time-consuming, having you repeat mundane tasks for the sake of leveling your character or collecting the next item. I don't know how to explain, but it's like the whole sense of immersion is fraudulent (this is my complaint about Oblivion as well), because you can easily take any particular quest and replace it with anything, built around a "go here, do this, repeat" framework that is essentially endless and pointless. I put up with repetitive battles in Final Fantasy games (6 being my favorite) because there is something magical about the world that is created, there is an epic story that comes to an epic conclusion, and has themes that can really touch the heart if you let them. With MMO's it's just an endless sea of completely replaceable quests, environments, the mundane leveling, and like i said the worst part is that their artificial worlds start to take precedence over important things, and suck away countless hours. It's kinda like Pokemon with it's "gotta collect them all", except you can never collect them all, because they are constantly adding more. With MMO's (or other addictive online games) it seems a lot of people start to feel obligated to spend hours in that world, to maintain some sort of social or status thing they've got going on there, missing out on real life the whole time. IDK, not neccessarily the case, just my 2 cents

end rant

A guy in the documentary just said it better than I could've thought to:

"These videogame environments may actually be holding up a very critical eye to the society that we have out here. It might be saying something deeply and dramatically negative. [...] If we lose hundreds of millions of people to these synthetic environments, that'll be a terrible condemnation of the kind of world we've made out here."

That's exactly it. If this is what people are turning to, think what that means about what they're turning away from. This is what human lives have become? It's horrifying.

I agree it seems like a waste of time, but if they are enjoying it it is no more a waste of time
than everything else is. when they start neglecting things that NEED to be done for survival(food, job, education, sleep)
that's when it scares me.

It's not all that unhealthy. In major excess like some people do take it.. it can be detrimental.
But in moderation its fine..
MMOs tend to foster a sense of community and camaraderie that some people can't find elsewhere. Good friendships can and do form.
For a lot of people its more like a chatroom of friends with a video game attached.
I'll agree that it can be unhealthy if played to extremes
to the point where you start to neglect real life obligations.
But no one has anyone to blame for that but themselves.
A lot of people spend the same amount of time watching TV,
some may argue games are far more interactive and entertaining, and may 'feel' more rewarding.
That's why they are so addicting.
But for a lot of people it's just an escape into a land of fantasy and imagination, and there's nothing really inherently wrong with that.
Especially games that foster a sense of community.
People play video games because it is an enjoyable experience.
When a game ceases to be enjoyable and feels more like a second job is when you've taken it too far.
So again like all things in life... moderation is key.
People demonizing MMOs is the same thing as blaming drugs for people being fuckups..
it's not the drug's fault you take it all the time and do stupid things.
It's not the drug or the game, its the person.

MMOs are just a hobby, a source of entertainment, and a place to talk to people and adventure together all rolled into one.
Maybe that's why like 500 trillion people play them

To each his own I suppose... my girlfriend spends hours on end reading books about gay vampires (yes, Twilight).  That seems more detrimental to me than playing video games with some other sheltered nerds

One more thing I can say is when I stop playing WoW, I will spend a lot more money on PS3 and Wii games to keep me entertained.  It's got to be the cheapest and most time consuming hobby ever.

I have no idea what an MMO is. I guess that means I'm in the clear than?

Assuming this is stuff like World of warcraft. yes. I hate that shit. It's ruined my faggy pothead friends.

Goes something like this:

" hey man, let go the bar, get fucked up,and fuck bitches!"

" naw, dude, I gotta take my dark elf lord knight to volderdorf and take a dump, it's gonna be all night"

" well were gonna go enjoy life,Fag..."

Yep, I live with someone who like that right now. He's involved with it in the most extreme way anyone possibly could be, and it's seriously fucking creepy.

If only he'd smoke a bowl with me I think it could change his whole perspective on life, but he's not having it.:nonono:

I agree with shroomism. MMO's are fine in moderation just like everything else.  They recently took out one of those play places in a burger king near me, and put in video games instead.  I think that is a shame. eventually we will never see kids playing outside again.

Trust me, you were nothing like this guy, I guarantee it. He's almost 30, works 2 days a week part time at gamestop, and spends every single other second of the day playing games.

I've only seen the guy eat 4 or 5 times in the past 3 months.
