Hell yeah that's badass, hadn't seen that one.

I've seen the shrimp that raps on shells of mollusks and acheives the same effect, but from a distance like that?  Wow.

We caught a few mantis shrimp at New Smyrna Beach Florida last christmas. The dude I was fishing with picked one up and it split his thumb WIDE open. He didn't even know what happened till he started bleeding all over the damn dock.

I used to have a pistol shrimp. They're loud as hell and can be annoying after awhile.

Basically as a bubble collapses it compresses the gas inside into a superheated plasma. It can't actually burn you though, its an extremely tiny little burst of light.

Both the pistol shrimp and mantis shrimp are bad ass. I've kept both before and I have to say they are about equally entertaining.

Pistol shrimp tend to live in commensal relationships with goby fish. The goby watches guard while the shrimp digs the burrow. Goby gets a home, shrimp gets a warning system and some extra food. They're a pretty entertaining pair.

Mantis shrimps are just straight up bad asses. They're very curious and investigate anything. I've only ever kept the smashers though, not the spearers/slicers. Spearing/slicing mantis shrimp (Lysiosquilloidea) just freak me out.

Meh, not many good pictures of slicer/spearers, they're too fast for film cameras most of the time.
