First casing with Ph trouble
    #10809308 -

Hello all, going for my first casing, followed Tek, think it was Hawk, anyways...used hydrated lime, and yes, it was the horicultural blend as seen in pics.  Used large crushed oysters shells and added about 5% gypsum.  Mix looked great, threw in my new Ph tester which reads from 3-9 and that mofo want off the alkaline deep end, I would assume around 11 or 12. So...is this the initial shock of the hydrated lime which will taper off and then the rest will hold it steady for a month or so?  I have checked and rechecked measurements, did the 15.5cps recipe, then also compared that with the 4% lime and 15% oyster, and came up with same measurements.  Now I now the moss has all different levels of acidity, but a 10,000x difference?  I have also researched a little and found that vinegar diluted with h20, round 10-1, can help lower my fancy meter, but, before I start throwing in all sorts of extra ingredients, any recommendations...any help would be fantastically appreciated, thanks all

I think that if you used hydrated lime, you don't need oyster shells.  It's one or the other.  I may be wrong, though.

I believe the two are used for different things, actually. I think the oyster shell is more of a long-term buffer.
Can't help the OP though, sorry. Yet another reason I don't case.

If you guys are so unsure than why give advice?

Oyster shell is calcium carbonate, hydrated lime is calcium hydroxide.  We use hydrated lime or oyster shell flour to raise the pH.  Gypsum helps hold the pH steady, but this is NOT what a pH buffer is.  I know people constantly refer to gypsum as a "buffer", but that's not what that word denotes in chemistry.  Crushed oyster shell is only used for texture, it is oyster shell flour that raises the pH.

You are supposed to wait at least an hour after making up your casing layer mix before testing the pH.  Also, if you follow RR's tek for prepping the 50/50+ you add the vermiculite after testing/adjusting the pH. Hope this helps. ~Pixie~

This is a common problem.  Hydrated lime causes a drastic swing upwards in pH, but it comes back down within a few hours.  You probably could have used a bit more, so bear that in mind for next time.  I like my casing mixes to have a pH 8 the next day.

Thanks for responses, that was sort of the jist I got from reading your other posts RR.  So next time I might use a little more to hit that 8 range.  Wanted to do some smaller casings but due to space restraints I went with one.  Pretty deep layer of crumbles, maybe 3", 7 cakes, DEC'd the rest so as to not end up empty handed in case I screw it up.  Also decided to go with a 3/4-1" casing mix and will wait the extra days for a few more flushes, hopefully.  I will keep thread updated, any advice is always appreciated.

Oops....I edited my post above- Hydrated lime is calcium hydroxide.  Oyster shell is composed of calcium carbonate.  Dolomite lime, which we never use (always hyrdated lime) is calcium magnesium carbonate. In my original post above I had a brain-fart and called hydrated lime calcium carbonate, when it is calcium hydroxide. Edited. ~Pixie~
