hey all ,
ok here is a rundown on whats going on... i prepared wheat berries for a casing...but i prepared them wrong. there was too much water in the jar, so the grains would not shake at all.. you see it started to colonize anyway but since it was really "solid" it did not colonize all the way... it came to a halt after only colonizing half the jar... it got to the point where i was fustrated and decided to try and scoop out only the colonized part with a sterile spoon and knife.. since it was a quart jar you can immagine how rock hard it was heh.. i did not suceed in only getting the colonized part out..some of the un-colonized grain got in the mixture, and i could not do anything about it.. so i said fuck it and put as much colonized part in as i could, not caring if some of the uncolonized grain got it cause i didnt expect it to work anyway... now its been 2 days sicne in the terr... and the uncolonized grains and the colonized grains are colonizing and getting fluffy.. i can see some of it poking out of the coco coir i used... i thought i was at high risk of contams.. i just want to know if i got lucky or something or is it a false alarm. i see no signs of contam at all so far, so if anyone knows whats up please help me id love any input. thanks -PeZ

patch where the mycelium is showing through the coir. what you should be making it do is finish colonizing the rye that got in there that was uncolonized. though this might risk contams, its unlikely that they will occur if the mycelium takes over fast enough unless there were bacterial contams in the jars. a lot of times when i do birdseed, it will colonize most of it but leave a few wet spots. try the best you can to knock off the uncolonized or soggy parts and then dip the remaining mycelium mass into hydrogen peroxide water to kill any bacteria. good luck with the casing.
i also have some wheat berry casings going but unfortunatey my casing layer had a pH of 8 so i had to dump it off and recase. the mycelium isn't recovering the casing layer yet but the birdseed i did via H2O2 dip method with good casing pH more recently has taken off and is almost pinning.
also another thing. coco coir. its talked about a lot and recommended, but i think its not as good as a peatmoss + verm + oyster shells. coir tends to dry out very fast and should be buffered with lime to raise the pH else cobweb will thrive. also when picking fruits, coir tends to come off with the fruits too easily and requires a lot of repatching. hydrating the coir also is a task if you want only a small amount. i use a wood saw on the brick and it takes quite the effort and the mess.
good luck with the grow and post some pics when it gets going
