Did you explain Riemann sums to the 10 y/o?

I explained algebra to my brother when he was in the 3rd grade and he picked it right up

Yes, of course.  But I didn't use the words Riemann sum.

I know this post is kind of old now, but I the OP anyway. I am cooking with gas now in Calculus! I always tell my guitar students when they are stuck or struggling that as long as they keep at it, and keep practicing, that they will have their "epiphany moment" where stuff will start to come together. Well, I kept practicing like a man with a mission, and had my epiphany moment with calculus about midway through the semester.

I got a D on my first test...and trust me when I say that I have never worked harder for a 'D'. God I studied so hard. Now however, I am just a few points shy of an A in the class. I am just totally amped about it. I am also pretty proud of myself given that just under one year I literally did not know how to divide a fraction, nor could plot a point on a graph. I was just one of those cats that didn't give a shit about math and never paid a bit of mind to it. Now I am totally falling in love with it. It is pretty fucking cool what people can figure out with Calculus. This is where math really begins to happen. I cant' wait to take as much math as I can now!

So anyway, I just wanted to share my joy. Ciao and peace.

Thats great to hear!

There is so much negativity surrounding calculus and math in general, so its nice to see a success story where not only is calculus understood but also it is in a way enjoyed.

Yeah, there seems to be a mentality in the culture that a person is either good at math, or not...and if they are not naturally good at it, then there is no point in studying it. That is really too bad. It is very satisfying when the concepts start to come together.

Whelp! I am finishing up Calculus II in one week. Jesus man! This course was a real ass-kicker to do over the summer. Packing in all that memorization of crap in eight weeks has been rough. I'm kicking tail with it now though. Math is coming around pretty good now baby! I am also glad I have returned to doing a lot of drugs over the last few years also man. I love thinking about this stuff when I am high and or tripping.

Next semester I am doing Calculus III, a proofs class, linear algebra, and the history of mathematics. Should be hard, but cool in the long run.

Peace to all my brothers and sisters.

:sun: Peace :sun:

Cool man, that is so awesome to hear.  I think calc III is quite a bit funner than II.  Its alot more geometric, visual and it builds on itself instead of being all scattered like calc II.  I assume you are doing series and sequences right now?  Linear algebra is pretty fun too, I like it better than diff eqs.

There was finals today at school but I didnt have one.  Thats a sweet feeling, watching others squirm.

Shit who cares about Riemann sums, Lebesgue integration is where its at.

Also I generally hate math and science, though I stick with it.

We through with all of the series and sequence stuff. Calc II just seems like sort of a meat-grinder course. We are doing material with polar coordinates etc. This is stuff that I can actually see people using, and being applicable to the real world. Most of Calc II just seems like a bunch of material that mathematicians found were self consistent, and hence mathematical...but of no real value to anyone else except for the purposes of teaching it in a class. I'm just glad to be getting it over with.

I am interested in Riemman for the higher geometry aspect. That course will come in the fall. I gotta get proofs under my belt to prep for it though.

I took some Seroquel my senior year in my calculus class. I hadn't eating anything that day and when i got up to go to the restroom i straight passed out at the door. My school nurse and the police officer tried threatening me to tell them "what i too" or they would take me to the hospital to have my stomach pumped...My parents flipped out on them after they tried to kick me out of school and so i didn't get caught. I hated that school.

if you look on youtube MIT has calculus lectures from their school. There is entire semesters on their mainpage. I watch alot of those to keep my brain thinking.

Jesus Man! I can actually relate. I had that stuff prescribed to me a few years back by a shrink I was seeing when I was going through some really serious depression. I would eat a half a pill and within a half an hour I couldn't even see straight enough to type an email. After about a week of that, it dawned on me that anything that is crushing me that hard couldn't possibly be good for me. I did my research on it, and found a lot of really serious side effects associated with it...and not just side effects that only 1/10,000 of the people get. There were a lot of people getting really sick from that stuff.

So I got off all meds, started smoking pot again (that was about the time I signed up on the shroomery, learned how to grow boomers, started my own business doing guitar instruction, got married, have two beautiful girls now, own my own house, and now I am switching careers to be a math teacher.

Anyway, Seroquel sucks ass.

Someone else around here posted a link that has all the material they use for theier classes online. I have it bookmarked somewhere...but I have to find it again. I think that is pretty progressive of them.

i bought like 20 in hs. Me and my friend took 1 each when we were at the cross country state championships, the night before in our hotel room. We were so fucked up we couldn't get off the bed to stop our friends from stealing a skateboard and when these 2 fishes wanted to come have some fun we were gone...I have another friend who has gone crazy a couple of times, currently in prison for interstate threats, he would take so many he didn't even feel the effects anymore. he could go on with his day like nothing.  That drug is crazy, its like taking 6 xanax pills...

I know i thinks its awsome how they are opening their classrooms for free to the public. There are lots of people who also teach some calculus on youtube if you need help with something. I have alot of them subscribed.
