anyone ever grown big fruit tomatoes in pots?
    #10689430 -

like, i know you can grow cherrys and grape tomatoes and the smaller variets, but im wondering if i could grow beefsteak in a big pot
i did a lil readin up on it but, couldnt find any first hand accounts from anyone growing stuff like beefsteaks and such in containers
i ask because i lost most of my tomatoes this year and i was told its possibly due to the fact we had so much rain and a fungus developed in the soil and it will proly take the winter for it to die off
maybe some sulphur i was told, but id rather not chance it
i found some more tomato plants i will be buying tommorow and would rather not put them in the ground.  i have a bunch of cherry and grape tomatoes in pots and i know they will do fine but i was wondering if anyone had any experience growing big tomatoes in containers and how big the containers need to be?

You just have to stay up on the fertilizer and water more frequently.

I have a 6 foot pine tree in a  5 gallon bucket....

It pretty much stunted at that size, but that will change when he goes in the ground in kansas !!!!!

yeah it definitely works. my grandpa filled up his greenhouse, so now he grows a ton of tomatoes and crap on his deck in pots

you might also want to look into those hanging tomato basket setups. tomatos grow on vines, so they usually need stakes or something to climb on, but you can hang a basket full of soil and just let the vines grow off it too.

Hey I know this thread is a year old. But check out what these two kids have done.

Ive got 3 tomato plants going in these buckets and just had to cut one back because it got too big and wild. Works like a charm and not a single weed to date, and Ive mixed in some Oyster Mushroom mycelium. It seems to be fully colonized but no pins yet. Lots of tomatoes though!
