Was your soil extra soggy this year from all the spring and early summer rains?? Where abouts are you?
Well the soil here in Florida sucks.. so I am forced to use 5 gallon buckets. They were well drained. I dunno. After the plants died off, I removed the dirt from the buckets and the dirt was moldy. I have only hads this problem with tomatoes. I am used to growing tomatoes in the midwest, in the ground, and not in containers. Soil recommendation?

not to ignore the soil recommendation question, but how often do you folks water?
I've gotten all sorts of contradicting suggestions...

i wish i could be more helpful to this thread but my understanding of tomatoe farming is basically nil. they seem to like water and lots of sunlight, good soil with a neutral to slightly acidic ph tho i never really bother about the ph too much unless there's a problem. i do know that manure and compost works wonders for tomatoes. (lycopersicon lycopersicum)
with regard to cross pollination anno is absolutely correct. there would be cross pollination if one was growing different strains in proximity to one an other. for tomatoes the seed saver guideline for pure seed is that variaties be spaced 75 to 150 feet in open air.
hope this is helpful
the southern exposure seed exchange is an excellent source for heirloom seeds of all kinds. their 75 page printed catalogue is well worth the couple of dollars they ask.

You might be thinking of the THC oranges hoax http://cannabisodling.1av10.nu/orange_high.html Not that that article admits it's a hoax, but it obviously is.

Excuse me if I have this wrong, but isn't your name "tomatoes"? I think with a name like tomatoes, you should be legally obligated to be an expert on the subject of tomatoes!

lol i have resolved to "setting a goal and applying mental discipline" to bone-up on tomatoe farming. promise (that or drop it altogether).
lesson one: the correct spelling of the singular is tomato not tomatoe. the plural tomatoes adds the "e".
you see, there is much to learn . . .
now let's just let this thread sink slooowly into the mushroom mother.

I just picked my first Brandy Boy. It was still a teeny bit under ripe, but I couldn't wait any longer. I'm munching on it now with some salt and pepper. Damn this thing is good. I can't wait for the other varieties to start to ripen too. Nothing beats a good fresh 'mater, except maybe for some fresh picked sweet corn. I can't wait for the corn to be ready in a few weeks.
